Vitamins and Vitamin A concern

I just verified that I am pregnant last week and it looks like right about now I am 5 weeks.  I went to my general doctor and she said all I needed to take in the way of vitamins are prenatal and at that only one a day.  I know we are wired different now a days and I think the better thing to do would be a prenatal and a bariatric vitamin but I worry about the vitamin A in the bariatric vitamin.

I currently take
Calcium Citrate 250X 2 3 times a day
1 prenatal vitamin in the monring
1 bariatiric advantage chewable at night
1 probiotic
1 B12 every other day

Before I would take
Calcium Citrate 250 X 2 3 times a day
1 Bariatric Advantage chewable 2 times a day
1 probiotic
1 B12 every other day

What my real concern is my levels are amazing every time I get them checked.  I just worry they will drop off and also want to make sure the baby doesn't get too mush of what it doesn't need like Vitamin A.  Please let me know what you all are doing and how you adjusted your vitamins after being pregnant.

I worry about the same thing.  I haven't changed anything but I added the prenatal vitamin so I take...

1 prenatal vitamin
2 centrum multivitamins
1500mg calcium citrate
1 b12 500mcg every other day

Not sure if that is correct or not but that's what I told my doctor I am taking and he didn't seem too concerned with it.

Please forgive my silly question, but as someone ttc I feel I need to ask this to be as informed as possible. What is the worry about vitamin a? I am currently on vitamin A and my numbers look good, so just wondering.....

I am not sure but on everything I read they say to try to avoid too much vitamin A it could hurt the baby.  I also don't know the answer that is why I came on here to find out what other mothers have done to see.  So far not much response.  :)  There are never silly questions.

The side affects of too much vitamin A during pregnancy are the same concerns they have with Accutane and pregnancy. If taken in extremely high doses for a long time (vitamin a is a "fat" so it does not flush out of the system if too much is taken) it can cause head deformities and heart issues. I would not take any more than 2 mutivites if you are an RNY patient. There are some multivites with very low A and a prenatal RX called Zantean (sp?) that has DHA and no A in it. Also, avoid large quantities of yellow vegetables (carrots, squash, yams, ect) because they are the highest in A, if this is your concern.

Thanks for the info, Chelle.  Out of curiosity--what was your revision to?

You're welcome! I had a lapband for 6 years and a revision to RNY in March.

So would you suggest that I take only 1 multi and my prenatal a day instead of 2 multis and my prenatal a day?  I will ask my doctor on friday when I see him but I was wondering what you thought.

I would only take 2 multis a day, or replace one with a prenatal. 3 vitamins containing A may be too much. You can always take extra folic acid & iron to supplement them. Or look into one of the links I posted as a supplemental 3rd vitamin. Don't forget, there is a lot more A in food than most people originally thought. Your surgeon may not seem too concerned because he does not specialize in prenatal care, and the OBGYNs know nothing about bariatric surgery so they are rarely on the same page. I know this firsthand. Throw a dermatoligist inn the mix, and you're head is spinning.
I was on Accutane for 8 months, so I did a lot of research about A and the risks on a pregnancy.
Good luck to you ladies.
