Mirena-IUD, what were your side effects

My dr. told me I would be a little messed up for the 4-8 weeks.  I have had alot of crampy feeling since inserted (it will be six week on Friday), but again indicated it was normal.  Also, I started my period 9 days ago!!!  it was earily from my 31 cycle that is typical for me, but it hasn't stop.  A normal period is 3 days, very short and light.

Curious questions-
1) did your first cycle after insert last longer
2) did you eventually stop having your cycle
3) cramps....they went away right????

Anythoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks-Stacey

I had mine put in about 8 week after my lil one arrived.  I had my cycle right before I went in for the IUD...I never stopped bleeding once it was place---I believe I left it in for about 8-10 weeks.  I don't mean light little spotting either..I mean had to wear a pad bleeding, yes for a day it would be almost nothing then the next day I would be bleeding.  I bloated and crampy....I felt tired, I had issues with facial hair (I have PCOS but the hair issue had calmed way down since RNY), I had a hard time controlling my weight (getting baby weight off) I went for my 'string check' it was placed perfect- had to go back for a PAP because I refused it while pregnant...and I told them I was tired of bleeding after months and I wanted it out...they talked to me some about it, but I just told them to me it wasn't worth it...they thought I may have developed a post pregnancy thyroid problem (they testes and said it was okay)...so the Dr say "OH- well that isn't doing you any good-" here my body was expelling the IUD because the string was way longer then it should have been & one lil tug and it was out).    So I don't know if it was because my body was trying to expel it, but Mirena and I were not friends.  3 months almost of IUD - my issues didn't stop until it was out.   Thats just me---- I know lots of people who have loved, loved, loved their IUD. ( I wish that was the case for me too)

I had my Mirena placed at my 6 week check up back in May.  I thought that I would never stop bleeding and I was having pains on one side.  My OB sent me for an ultrasound to make sure that it was placed correctly.  It was, so she prescribed estrogen for a month.  That seemed to help with the bleeeding, but I will tell you...I was soooo close to having it removed.  The cramps and discomfort will go away.

I am sooooo happy that I didn't now!!!!!  I love it.  I don't feel it anymore, except for when I am on my period sometimes and I don't have to worry about BC.   I have had it for 5 months now and I am still getting monthly cycles that last just a few days.  I am hoping that they eventually subside.

I would suggest that you give it some time and just anticipate some side effects as you body gets back to normal from being pregnant and adjusts to the Mirena.  It is definitely worth it.

Good luck!

The cramps do go away. if this is your first one, it may take a few weeks for them to go away totally. Sometimes taking vitamin E will help.

I did have about 6-8 weeks of spotting after it was inserted, but now my periods have disappeared totally. I would have a light, but long lasting "period" and then a few days off and then it would start up again.

This is my 2nd Mirena. had the 1st one put in after being on depo for 5 years. Since it can take 18 months for your cycle to come back after depo, I never had any spotting. This time I did have spotting, and it was annoying, but it did stop.

I had a lot of cramps afterwards. It lasted for weeks. My first cycle was pretty normal but I did have light bleeding for about a month. I never stopped having my cycle, but I was able to conceive right after I had it taken out, so I guess that's a good thing. My biggest complaint with it was that right before my period I would get so moody. My poor DH always knew when it was about to be "time". I could just feel the emotions turn on and off- it was so bad. After the baby is born I want to go back to a copper IUD like I had before my mirena. The success rate is just about the same but I won't have those nasty hormones killing me and everyone around me.

hi! i dont post on here often but i did want to comment on your post. i got my mirena on december 7th 2009. the day before my son turned 2. i am having it taken out on thursday. i know many people who have loved it! for me though, its been hell for the almost 11 months i have had it.
i have continuously gotten my period every two weeks, except this month its been every week. i have it for 3 or 4 days, then 3 days off then i get it again. i have had migraines since i was little, no one told me i shouldnt get an IUD with migraines, the IUD triggered the migraines to get much worse. my weight loss also slowed to an almost stop. i got it 5 months after my RNY and have only lost 30lbs since i got it inserted. i have also gotten acne and hair on my face thats horrible and embarassing. my hormones are so out of whack that my husband is fed up with my mood swings. after getting it inserted i had cramping and bleeding but i was normal again after a month, for about a month. but i think my side effects arent in the "norm". as i said i know many people who have loved it and would get another one in a heart beat.
my suggestion is give it a little more time, but listen to your body, if something doesnt feel or seem right talk to your dr.
good luck!

For me, the Mirena was GREAT for just under 5 yrs.  No period, no cramping, spotting NADA.....well ONE huge side effect.  It didn't work!  I got pregnant on it!  I have known a ton of women who have gotten it based on the fact that I didn't have a period and they bled for weeks on end.

I delivered 6 weeks early a 5lb 15oz lil boy:)  After spending 2 months on bed rest in the hospital and Mason spending 11 days in the NICU, we're both home and doing great!  Mason is getting bigger and gaining weight like he should.  Now it's my turn to lose this weight!  It's tough to get back on the band wagon...I CAN do this!

Hi Nicki,

I have had my Mirena for about 6 months and I have heard a few people say that they have gotten pregnant on the Mirena.  That is such a scary thought!  I know that nothing is 100% but I figured that the Mirena was extremely close.  How and when did you even realize that you were pregnant since you werent' having periods?  What happens when you get pregnant with the Mirena inserted?

Thanks for the info!

Hi!
I never even thought I could be pregnant!  I wasn't feeling good and was going to call my doc.  Everyone at work was telling me I was pg....so before I called him I bought 3 EPT digital tests....the most expensive so there would be no doubt I wasn't.  Well 3 positives and I wasn't convinced.  Had my doc order me some blood work.  Positive!  Finally my big "holy **** I'm pg" was the following Fri when they had me come in for an emergency ultrasound to check placement of the IUD.
IUD was and continues to be in the correct spot....so far they're not removing it.  As far as right now it will just be removed when I deliver....I deliver C-section so they'll tie me up at that time too:)
Having the Mirena while I'm pg puts me at higher risk....they said like 50-50% chance of miscarriage.....let's just add a little more stress:)

All is can say is "WOW"!  I know that nothing is 100%, but I really thought that the Mirena was pretty fail safe.  I hope and pray that you have a healthy pregnancy and a happy, healthy MIRENA baby..  From now on I am planning to take a HPT periodically..just to be on the safe side.

Take care!
