C-Section after WLS

I have been doing a lot of reading since I found out that I am expecting.  I came across an article somewhere that said women who have had RNY surgery are more likely to require a C-section.  I am wondering if anyone can let me know if there is any truth to this.

Thank you for all the feedback.

I had a c-section.  had nothing to do with my rny.  You have a muchhhhh greater risk of having a c-section in this world today.  The c-section rate where I live in NJ in 50/50.  Also being overweight ups the c-section rate also.  I would watch the movie "the business of being born" way before you deliver.  it's really eye opening.  I wish I had seen it before I went into labor.  Might have saved myself from the c-section.  good luck!

The fact that a person has RNY surgery has NOTHING to do with C-section.  The C-section factors are higher due to weight, previous c-sections, and as PP said the fact that so many drs are going with c-sections today than previously.

Dont think it has much to do with WLS...but chances of c-sections are higher then they probably should be (some aren't necessary).  I had 2 c-sections- my dtr head was stuck, stuck, stuck (after 17 hrs of labor)...and then the second time they suggested a repeat c-section...I probably could have said no...but at that point- I knew c-section and I knew with my first baby her head was only in the 15th percentile (or so) so her head was tiny..so when they estimate my second to be bigger...no way.  Kepp positive- keep reading and preparing.

I think that many of us who have WLS have more managed pregnancies and births than the average non-WLS patient.  Many of us are labeled high-risk (I'm not sure it's always warranted, but I'm not a medical professional so my opinion is not an expert one) and some of us had high-risk pregnancies or births before surgery when we were morbidly obese.  I doubt there is anything in our new plumbing that causes vaginal birth to be any harder than it should be for any woman, but if our OBs or midwives induce labor more often in WLS patients than in non-WLS patients, that alone can lead to more c-sections.

If you don't want a c-section, go to a provider with a low rate and consider a midwife rather than an OB.  Good luck!

Thank you all for your response.  I am being followed as high risk but not because of the WLS.  My first child was born 15 weeks early (natural delivery), my second was an ectopic that ruptured and I ended up in Emergency surgery.  I will be meeting with my Dr. in a month and will go over this with him.  Thanks again for the information.

The fact that you've had a vaginal birth makes your chances of avoiding c-section better.  That must have been very difficult to have an early preemie like that!  And the ectopic.  I hope you have an easy time this time around.

Hyjacking the topic a bit, but since you have had a previous ectopic rupture (I have also) have you seen the doctor yet this pregnancy to check for safe implantation? My doctor had me go in already to make sure the gestational sac was in a safe place. he said some women get to 13 weeks before realizing the ectopic. Maybe call the OB and ask if they'd like to check that?
