I have a few questions, I am 21 months post op from gastic bypass surgery.  I have struggled with my calcium since day one.  I have not been able to find a citrate that I can swallow until a few months ago.  I am still struggling to remember to take it..... I just found out that I am pregnant and I am 5 w tomorrow..... I am using this as my ambition to remember to take my calcium daily now.... but is the previous late of the supplement going to affect my pregnancy?? i am doing great with my vitamins and my b12 pills and have since the beginning.

I am scared about screwing this up. I was pregnant in june but at 8 weeks pg I lost my baby. I just don't what to know that my lack of calcium is the result!!!

Any advice would be great!

Also....are we more at risk for bowel blockages while pg???

I can say that I have a hard time absorbing calcium and what I was absorbing turned into a kidney stone. Now that I am pregnant, I still do take my extra calcium but the baby is sucking it all up and npow my teeth are crumbling.

Go to the Celebrate Vitamins website, and request free samples. They will send you a variety of chewables. I have the Calcium Plus citrate cherry tart. They taste like sweet tarts. Calcium is very important for RNY's because we can only absorb the citrate, and none from milk or food. Even without being pregnant, not taking your calcium can put you at risk later on for arthritis, osteoperosis, and Vit D deficiancy. I take Bariatric Advanage multi chewable, it has a very high concentration of vitamins and calcium citrate in it too. I would also add a D3 supplement if I were you. I take 2 BA multi's a day, 1500mg calcium citrate, 1000mg D3, and iron daily. It seems like a lot, but last I just had my labs done and they are all "normal".

I suck on the BA calcium cinnamon. It helps. And the BA chews are good too.

Not everyone has that problem.  i had RNY and am fortunate enough to not have to take vitamins daily.  I absorb things just as a normal person would. (kinda worries me if the surgery was done correctly - but i lost 150 lbs so i guess so) I havent regained any weight and my labs are all coming back normal.

What should I look for so that I am sure Im not being dooped by my family dr. I have never been good at remembering to take vitamins.

Well for starters....
1. if you had RNY (less than a year and a half ago) your body is NOT absorbing nutrients & vitamins like a normal person. They should have made that clear to you before you had surgery, that you would have to take a multi, b12 sublingual, and calcium citrate, every day, for the rest of your life.
2. vitamin deficiancies can take months or even years to show up, especially the fat soluble like A & D.
3. a full set of labs for RNY's is about 13-18 tubes of blood, to check ALL levels. If you have not had this done, then they are not being totally honest with you.
4. if you become pregnant again, I hope you take the required amount, daily, regardles of what your dr is telling you.

NOT pregnant ... was directed here via another board topic, but I LOVE the bariatric advantage calcium chews.  It is like getting to eat candy 6 times a day (for me 1500 mg)!  My favorite is the chocolate, but I also get the raspberry.  It is calcium CITRATE and vitamin D3.

Congrats Kandace, that's great news.

I really struggle with my Calcium as well (3000mg) but my OB said not to worry to much about it.
