We Are Now on Zantac

Hi ladies!

Just got from the pediatrician.  Anushka is now on Zantac.....I told the ped about her erratic feedings and sleeping........the small amount of fussiness........and the fact that I was concerned about what was going on with her.

She immediately said it sounded like the reflux was getting worse and asked if we were opposed to putting her on medication.  She prescribed Zantac twice a day, as well as telling me to add 1tsp of rice cereal to her formula so it was thicker.

She said that this should help the issues tremendously.  She also told us to us our judgement on the Zantac.....if we didn't think it was working to stop giving it to her.

Just wanted to give you ladies an update!

When abby had reflux..she got worse on the meds..but what they DID tell me is to by Beechnut cereal..not the other brands. Something about it was better and less known to make the reflux worse! Good luck. Abby slept in her swing (and I use the term "Slept" very lightly as she really never did...) till she was about 2!!

The rice cereal should help alot. (I posted this before) It worked well for Tristan and we could do with out the medication. Hopefully it gets better for you too.

Thanks for updating!

The acid reducer might not help right away, Rowan had to be on it for about 10 days before it made a really noticeable difference, so be sure to try it for at least 2 weeks,

I feel for you Emily has the worst reflux ever.  We have tried every formula there is. We tried prilosec (sp?) becasue our insurance would not cover prevacid.  We gave up after a couple of days becasue it go worse.  I did find that Enfamil AR worked the best.  It is their tickened formula.  I did learn that their formula is thicked with rice starch vs rice cereal and the starch tends to be a little easier on their tummies then the cereal if they are under 6 months.

She still pukes after every bottle, but she is gaining good weight and not fussy with it so the pedi is not all that concerned.

Thanks Dev for the tip, we could just not take her gettign worse we may try it again and try to suffer thru.

Good Luck!

I want to thank everyone for their response!!  Last night after I gave her first dose, she threw up from the bottom of her toes.....

I called the nurse this morning and she said it might be the strong taste of the medicine.  I should make sure there is plenty of time between feedings when I give it to her.

I have another question......did anyone's pharmacy flavor it for th baby??  My Target pharmacy said they could flavor it grape and it might go down better.....Just wante to know if this was worth a shot....

THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!!  You ladies make me feel so much better, especially when I feel like  suck as a mom!

Is the Zantac a liquid or a tablet you have to disolve?  When we were trying the prilosec it was a liquid and I could give it to her direct ( which I am sure taste like crap) or I could put it in her bottle.

I just got off the phone with my pedi actually and we are trying the Previcid today.  The insurance apparently approved it after all so we are going to try that. The doc did save that either drug could take 7 -10 days before we really start to see results, so I am going to try and stick with it even if it gets worse at first.

Good Luck to both of us!

Hey Kim!

It's liquid.....they told me not put in her formula.  I can't even let her suck it from a nipple.....because they want to make sure she gets it all.

I called the pharmacists back to see if it lessens the mint flavor, but she said it takes on a grapy mint flavor, so I'm not sure if that will be better or not.

Thanks for getting back with me....and yes, good luck to us both!!!

Abby ended up on prevacid..the zantac did not work but she also went through every kind of formula and finally ended up on nutramagin..prescription only and the downside is that it cannot be mixed ahead of time, but the upside was that my insurance covered it in full so I never ahd to apy for formula ever!
