Pregnancy after Surgery

I am new here and I was wondering how it works when you get pregnant after having weight loss surgery.  I am contemplating surgery, and I have not had any kids yet but hopefully plan to in the future.  Is it hard to get enough food/nutrients for the baby after surgery?  Would the adjustable LAP band be the best option so it can be adjusted if I get pregnant?

When I was researching WLS, most of the doctors i spoke to recommended the VSG (vertical sleeve) for women who wanted to have children later on.
Their reasoning was no malabsorption of nutrients like with RNY and DS.Some OB's automatically consider RNY/DS patients "high risk" pregnancies- some don't.
Also morning sickness can sometimes cause vomiting which may lead to a slipped lap band or one needing to be deflated during pregnancy. The lapband women I personally know who went on to have children post-WLS gained TONS of weight while pregnant because their bands were deflated and they packed on the pounds.

Whichever surgery you choose, it is possible to have a healthy pregnancy, but some require close monitoring and blood work.

Goodluck with you decision!

I don't know the BEST option- I only know what is working for me. I don't have a sleeve or RNY so I won't venture to speak about them.

I am 6 yrs post op. I was down to 3lbs of my goal weight of 145. I ran a half marathon the year before I got pregnant. None of these things could have been possible without WLS. I am the healthiest I've ever been in my life. I am 38 and I don't think that this has been a hard pregnancy at all. I know that I would have felt completely different 140lbs ago.

I have gained a total of 13lbs so far. I am right on target. Not ALL lap-banders have to get unfilled and not ALL of us go through nausea and vomitting and have our bands slip. I haven't had to get anything taken out of my band yet at all. I DO have to continously watch what I eat and make sure I am getting in enough calories. When I eat like I am supposed to I can usually do that. In my first trimester I had 'morning sickness" at night and I'd go lay down and rest and I'd feel better. I do have to be cautious about calories but other than that I don't think that the band has affected my pregnancy in any negative way at all.

As soon as I get clearance to start running after the baby is here I plan on training again for another marathon. My band is just a tool and I can chose to use it or ignore it. Right now I am eating in a different way so that I can get in all my calories but come time for me to get back into my pre-pregnancy body I will use my band again to get myself down to where I feel comfortable again.

Good luck in whatever choice you make! I truly don't think there are any "right" or "wrong" surgeries and I don't think that every surgery is for everybody. It has to be an individual decision.  Again, good luck!

Although the band CAN be adjusted to be looser during pregnancy, it doesn't have to be. There are some docs (idiots) who take ALL the fluid out automatically, but mine doesn't and I know a few other women on this board who also kept some ro all of their fill during pregnancy.
Bottom line is, no matter what surgery you choose, it is possible to have a healthy pregnancy, so base your decision on other factors and seek guidance from your doctor!

Banded 03/22/06  276/261/184 (highest/surgery/lowest)

Sleeved 07/11/2013  228/165 (surgery/current) (111lbs lost)
