Yikes!

My dentist had mentioned to me that he sees a lot of RNY people with dental problems (crumbling/broken teeth). They usually advise against having any dental work when you're pregnant but if it's an emergency, the safest time to do any work is during your second trimester.

Goodluck!

when you are pregnant, if you don't consume enough Calcium (and for us RNY'ers it's taking Calcium Citrate supplements), the baby will take it from your body (your teeth and bones) to get what it needs to help the baby grow. I normally take 600 mg three times a day and did that when I was pregnant (so 1800 mg of CC).

I wish I would've taken CC before I had RNY and when I was pg with my first because I didn't know the baby would take from your body what it needs if you aren't getting enough in your diet and/or from supplements!! My teeth started going bad back in 2003 after I had my first baby! I am 31 yrs old and have like 8 crowns already! My teeth aren't breaking or chipping but they aren't doing too well and pretty soon, all of the back teeth will have crowns on them, lol.

I would check on seeing if you are taking enough CC each day and then check your vitamin D and PTH levels (to make sure you are absorbing your calcium).

Hit goal weight of 140 at 13 months out from RNY!! 130 pounds GONE!

LOL...Don't talk to me about teeth today.  I'm not pg...but I'm getting ready to get braces and the dentist wanted to change several old fillings for white fillings.  Unfortunately, the fillings were old...and lose...and she had to take care of cavities underneath them...including two root canals in the last week.  Thank God...the last one's done today...I do the braces next week.

Do you have your vits checked (ie calcium levels?). Talk to your dentist about what's going on and what can be done to prevent any more damage.  Hopefully there's a semi-easy fix for the current  damanage and something that can be done to prevent future damage.  Is it possible your bite has changed and is causing problems (ie did your teeth shift for some reason or is your jaw messed up - do you have TMJ?).

Yep, pregnancy can affect your teeth. Hormones from pregnancy also cause your gums to soften up and even bleed.

here's some helpful info: http://www.marchofdimes.com/pnhec/159_15293.asp

Wow at your teeth problems.  I can relate.  I havent specifically had the crumbling teeth, but I have had toothaches along with migraines for the last 2 months...literally.  It got to the point where my OB didnt know what the heck she was talking about.  She wanted to send me to a neurosurgeon.  From there I went to my PCP who thought it would be okay to take pain meds the remaining of my pregnancy and then deal with the problem which we thought was dealing with my teeth.  I did that for about 2 wks, but after being concerned about the baby, i decided to go to the dentist on my own.  That was a big ordeal to get the okay for xrays, but to make a long story shorter, I had oral surgery removing 2 remaining wisedoms teeth and a moler, got a intense cleaning scheduled in 2 wks, got a root canal to do and at least 4 filings.  You would think my smile was really jacked or my teeth would all be black and rotten, but no I have a beautiful white smile. I have never had this intense of dentistry needed until I got pregnant.  I dont know if lack of CA from the surgery contributed, but I do know it hurted.  Since the surgery I have not had an inkling of a headache.  I am blessed.  I hope you feel better and I advise you to see a dentist as soon as possible.

Ugh, you poor thing. I feel you entirely. I went into my pregnancy with no tooth issues, and after I was done BFing, I had four cavities and had to have two root canals. Meh. I HATE dental work. Sorry you have to go through it ... it's not uncommon ... but I know that doesn't help much.

I am 25 and dental care all my life got pregnant with baby 1 and had one root canal...lost that baby and then got pregnant with molly had 18 plus cavities needed 4 plus root canals and 2 teeth pulled have to have another pulled and still have several cavities have had probably 5000 or more worth of work done...I can't take calcium I get kidney stones so I take vit D and all my other vits....I am so upset and depressed I can't afford all the work that needs done I need to crowns on 2 root canals had done. they crumble and break I also have like 3 that are cracked...Its awful I finally started doing research and it seems RNY is the root problem. I have seen so many people 5/6 yrs out and studies done with dental and bone problems being on the top five of problems.

I had maybe 3 cavities before RNY. I can not eat certian things for fear I will crack a tooth. I bumped my front tooth on a glass and it broke in half. :(

I am afraid to have another pregnancy.
