Low blood count & 25 weeks, PLEASE HELP!
I went in for my Glucose Tolerance test this morning (which may I add sucked! I got dizzy and shaky and they had to lay me down for a little while). They also took a blood count and told me that it was 11 and the normal range was to be between 12-15. They told me to eat more food high in iron, but I am also a Gastric bypass patient and I don't think the Nurse realized this when she gave me the results over the phone. I'm going to call back in the A.M. to re-talk to someone about this. This is my viatmin list, can anyone help me some? I am already eating high iron foods also.
Super B Complex (has 400 mcg folic acid in it), taken once daily in a.m.
Vitamin D3/ 5,000 IU, taken once daily in the a.m.
Calcium Citrate + D3/ 500 IU every 2 caplets, taken 3 times daily. (total six pills taken daily)
Prenatal Plus Iron Tabs (given to my by my OB), taken once every p.m.
Folic Acid/ 400 mcg, taken once every p.m.
The Calcium D3 and my folic acid also have extra calcium added. Should I be taking 2 folic acids daily? Or am I lacking a vitamin? I am a littl;e over 25 weeks preggers and I am so afraid of neural tube defects or anything else that can harm my baby due to low iron. Thanks!
BTW, I will find out my Glucose tolerance results tomorrow. Please cross your fingers that the results are normal! I really don't want to do the 3 hour test also!

low iron is very common in pregnant women whether your a gastric bypass patient or not. I also had low iron and had to take additional iron to boost it up. Your iron is slightly low but its not at a dangerous level. I would keep having my labs drawn to monitor it. If need be you can always have iron fusions to boost your levels if they get to low.
I agree with the previous poster. I wouldn't worry too much. Ask if they want you to take additional iron. My level got down to a 3 and I had to have 2 infusions. I felt AMAZING after the infusions, but really bad before them. The highest amoung of folic acid you should take is 1000mcg, so you prob shouldn't up it anymore as you are prob getting some from your food as well, but ask your doc. I know we have to be careful about overloading D vitamins while pregnant. My doc told me that, even though I was D deficient, she would prefer for me not to take an additional supplement.

Opps! Yes, I take a B12 sublingual every three days. LOL. I forgo to add that to my list.
My OB office called me back today and I passed my Glucose Tolerance test! I am so releived with that! They also told me that my blood count is a little low, but it's not under 11 and until then they are not concerned. It was an 11.6 so...I guess I shouldn't get so worked up after all. The normal range is 12-15 I guess.
Then my Bariatric surgeon's officecalled me and told me taht ALL of my 1 year post op labs were normal except for the slighly low blood count as well. They also had no concerns and my Surgeon's physician assistant told me that my levels were impressive considering I was even a gastric bypass post op patient! She told me that even regular OB patients who didn't have the surgery don't usually have such great results on everything! I was so happy to hear this! Basically I was just told to eat more iron enriched foods, but that my iron may be a little lower just due to increase in blood volume from the pregnancy even. I'll be re-checked in a few weeks.
Thanks Girls for the support!
