I was scheduled for a c-section on Thursday, the 23rd.  On Monday (the 20th), my mom and I ran errands all over the place.  I felt like total crap, but figured it was just pregnancy.  My doc had scheduled me for biweekly non-stress tests, and since I felt so awful, I figured it was a good time to go up for the test.  The nurse hooked me up to the monitor, and like 2 seconds later, she said that the baby had already passed the test, but that they had to watch for 20 minutes.  Then the baby's heart rate skyrocketed into the high 180's.  Another nurse came in and said that they were calling the doctor to see what he wanted to do.  He decided to keep me for observation over night.  Then I started having contractions - nothing painful, but they were there.  So I spent the night in the crappiest bed I could ever imagine.  The baby stabilized over night, and one of the nurses said they'd probably send me home, but I was really hoping we could just do the c-section.  It was only 2 days early.

The doctor came in the morning and said we should just deliver the baby since I was having contractions any way.  Aidia Floretta Hennis was born at 12:13 p.m. on Sept. 21 at 6 lbs 8 oz, 19" long.  She had some kind of rash all over her, but originally they said she was fine.  They kept her in the nursery for "observation" that night, and the next morning, they came in to tell me she was being transferred to the NICU.  Apparently, this kind of rash is caused by several serious conditions.  After 3 days in the NICU, and a whole battery of tests, they have determined that I contracted a virus very late in pregnancy, and it was transferred to the baby.  It's called CMV - cytomeglo virus (or something) - and can be very serious to unborn babies.  Most people have already been exposed to the virus, but lucky me, I wasn't.  It turns out my baby had only a mild case, and while she has a 40% chance of developing hearing loss, developmental delays, or learning disabilities, we got off pretty lucky.  They will monitor her closely, but that's about all we can do for now.  The virus is gone, and we were able to come home together on Friday night.

My niece posted some pics on Facebook.  I'm not sure if you have to be friends with her to see them (I don't think so), but you can be friends with me (Duhkee Hennis) and that will get you in.

Thanks for all the well wishes, and thanks especially to SAMARA!!!

I'm so glad to hear that all in all, things went well.  It's good they did the c-section when they did. Hopefully those few days early will have prevented any of the complications from the virus.
