Question for Lap-Band Moms....

How much did you eat when you were pregnant? I FEEL like I'm eating a TON because I'm used to eating 1/2 a cup to 3/4 cup at meal time. However, when I had my ultrasound at 19 weeks, the technician said she was "really skinny" and now I'm concerned that maybe I'm not eating enough.

I know that babies tend to gain all their weight in the third trimester. And, I plan to discuss this with my OB to see what she has to say. I have only gained ONE POUND so far, and I'll be 20 weeks on Saturday. I talked about weight gain with my OB around 14 weeks, and she said that I should try to gain 10-15 pounds for the duration of the entire pregnancy.

I'm just curious about your two cents. Thanks!!

hi I didn't have the lap band I had rny. But I can and could only eat small portions at a time too. I am 26 weeks now. What I will tell you is that everything you eat the baby gets what it needs first. So I wouldn't worry too much about the amount of food you are eating and the amount of weight your gaining. The way I figure, and I am no doctor, but you have to eat extra calories when you are pregnant to account for the baby. We probably are eating more calories than we usually do but still not as much as normal people which may account for the slow weight gain. This is just my reasoning like I said I am not a doctor. I will also say this, I wouldn't rely on what the ultrasound tech is saying about the baby's size. They told me with my last pregnancy that my daughter was going to be small 5-6 pounds. She came out 7 pounds almost 8.

Congrats on being halfway through and try not to worry so much.

Thanks very much! Yeah, I am kind of taking what the tech said with a grain of salt. I figured I would discuss it with my doctor to see what she had to say about my weight. She hasn't taken any measurements of my belly yet... but I'm not sure when that generally starts or how soon OBs usually start measuring. I'm not showing yet, so maybe that's why?

But yeah, regarding the food thing, I KNOW I'm getting 1700-2000 calories a day. Sure, it's not always in wholesome and nutritious foods, but I do my best. When I was in "diet mode" I was getting around 1300, so I think I'm doing pretty good!

I had the lapband for 6 years and researched a lot on pregnancy after it. I think you are still losing weight. And maybe you are not eating enough fat? Personally, I would add 2 EAS protien shakes a day, and eat a string cheese every day for snack. Are you taking a DHA? Does your prescription cover it? If so, look into Zatean DHA from your dr. 300 mg of DHA from purifed fish and soybean oil. It's not a prenatal vitamin alone though, just something to add to you regimine. Oh well, good luck with everything!!

LOL you sound like me. They didn't start taking measurements of my belly until my 24th week appointment. So you probably just didn't get to that point yet.

I am eating around 1750 calories, and I changed my percentages from 25-30%carbs, 40-45% protein, 30-35% fat to 35-40%carbs, 30-35%protein, and 30-35%fat.

I am aiming for about 25 lbs of weight gain.  I've been 7 lbs over the 25-lb trajectory but gaining at the ideal rate since 20 weeks (had a big gain between 16 and 20.)

That's pretty hardcore. I'm eating a pretty even amount of carbs, protein, and fat. I said if I can walk away from this gaining 20 pounds or less, I will be thrilled. (From a weight loss perspective.) But I just want to be sure my baby girl is getting what she needs!

It made a lot more sense when it was just me and I could track my diet and exercise and hone in on something that worked. Being pregnant I've tracked everything too, but it's kind of unpredictable with how much the baby is using, and how to count the exercise calories (e.g. If my heart rate is higher because I'm pregnant but I am not working as hard, is that more calories or less?)

Yeah, I'm pretty certain that if I were to continue eating the way I am now when I'm NOT pregnant, that the weight would just pile on. Hell, before I got pregnant, even when I was counting every calorie and working out and eating awesome, it was a struggle for me to lose one pound a week!! LOL!

I didn't really eat anymore with either pregnancy.   I was still overweight both times, so I knew I was eating enough calories to maintain a pregnancy with out adding anything.  With Hannah I gained 19 pounds (she weighed 6lbs 130z).  With Noah I only gained 6 pounds (he weighed 7lbs and 3oz).   I wish I could keep my metabolism while pregnant, without being pregnant lol.

Both of my band babies are very healthy, so my small weight gain didn't hurt either of them!
