Breastfeeding after a breast reduction?
Has anyone here been able to breastfeed after a breast reduction? Partially, or exclusively? I've actually had 2 breast reductons, so I am wondering if anyone here has a story to share. I would like to breastfeed for a few months. My daughter 12 years ago was bottle fed so I would like to try it. Thanks for any help!
I had a breast reduction in 2001 (I think) and had my son in 2005.
I was unable to breastfeed...I pretty much didn't produce enough milk for him. When pumping I barely got 1 ounce (total) from 3-4 pumpings.
I spoke to a lot of people, specialists, naturalists, etc.
It was pretty much agreed that the first time after a reduction, the chances are slim. But they did say I will have a much better chance of it the 2nd time round because the body has had a chance to try and remake those connections that were not there the first time. So I am hopeful that this baby will be able to breastfeed :-)
I believe it also depends on how they did your reduction....where they cut, what they cut, etc. It's a 50/50 chance, but I totally recommend trying just so that you can say you tried.
Good luck!!! If you have any questions please feel free to ask :-)
Thanks,
Jessica

I had a breast reduction in 2000 and had my son in 2006. I produced enough milk to breast feed but my nippes are funny shaped and small so he had a hard time latching on and I bottle fed him. I am sure that if I had persisted I could have but my husband was on deployment, I had not only the baby at home but a 7 year old and honestly it was just too stressful and that alone can make breastfeeding difficult even in the best of cir****tances. I reccomend getting in touch with a lactation consultant now while your pregnant and there may even be things that you can do while you are pregnant to increase your success. Good Luck to you :)
Did I mention that I was also recovering from a c-section and living in a 3rd floor apartment with NO elevator.
