Hi ladies,

I am currently looking into WLS.  I've lost 40lbs by diet and exercise in the last 6 months and I still have much more to lose.  We've TTC for 3 years, with very minimal fertility treatment.

I'm wondering if any of you had trouble TTC before your surgery and then got pregnant without any medication or treatment after WLS.

Even if you used treatment to get pregnant would you mind sharing your story.  I really want to try IVF, but I've read too many studies on how BMI relates to negative outcomes.

So, I'm just looking for some stories of success that will give me hope that after the weight is gone there may be a light at the end of the tunnel!!

Thanks!!

I got pregnant 16 years ago.  Then we tried for 12 years.  I had the surgery and since then I have had three boys back to back.  I had surgery in 2004, then had boys in 2007, 2009, and 2010.
No meds what so ever and all three were surprises.  We were not trying at all.  It just happened each time.

I never TTC before surgery but I do know I had PCOS and would have a hard time getting pregnant. The first month we tried I got pregnant and then miscarried. After getting my thyroid meds fixed and got cleard to TTC I got pregnant the first month out then too. I am now almost 36 weeks with that one.

I shall now be know as Hagatha: Queen of the queens.

Before surgery, I tried for almost 3 years with my ex-husband. We never tried any fertility treatments because he was against it for so long. I got divorced and remarried in 2008. We didn't necessarily "try", but we didn't use any protection and I wasn't on any type of birth control for the 2 and a half years we've been together. I was blessed with 3 wonderful step-children from my new husband and I was happy being a step-mommy even though I longed to have my own. Then, in June I took a pregnancy test to start my round of bc- BFN...i took bc every 3 months just to start my periods...well, in july when it was time for my period after the pills ran out I never got it. I thought the worst and feared something was seriously wrong because I had NEVER had that happen in years. Well, I bought a few more pregnancy tests before calling around to go see a doctor and what do you know...BFP!!! :) So, this baby was definitely a surprise and almost 6 years of no birth control, no fertility treatments, with PCOS, after WLS 3 years post op and here I sit 15 weeks preggo :)

I got married Sept 14 2002 and we started TTC then.  I had a gastric band Nov 2007 and reduced my BMI from 59 to 42 (so still really high)

I live in the UK where you can't have fertility treatment until you get to a BMI of 30 or less.  I got pregnant May 2009 but was sadly ectopic.  I had methotrexate so wasn't allowed to TTC again until Nov 2009.  I got my BFP on Christmas Eve 2009 and the end result was born 8 days ago.

Although I was considered high risk (high BMI and am 37) I had a perfect pregnancy, no problems with sickness, high blood pressure or gestional diabetes etc.  I lost 28lbs while pregnant and baby was 7lb 13oz when he was born and my BMI is now 35

Good luck with your weight loss and TTC x

I went through 8 years of failed fertility treatments prior to surgery.  We did everything from 'nothing' and just hoping to get pregnant to MULTIPLE rounds of Clomid (up to 200mg), a HSG (hystersalpingogram to check for clogged tubes) which was clear, and even a round of injectables with trigger shot and IUI all of which failed.  Once I lost the weight I got pregnant with DD#1 the 1st month we didn't use protection and timed BD with O using temping.  With DD#2 same deal...my OB & I firmly believe that had it not been for my WLS and weight loss...I'd not be a mom.

Good luck.

I have PCOS and TTC for 1.5 years before surgery.  After losing about 75lbs, my periods returned like clockwork and I was actually ovulating.  I got pregnant after 4 normal cycles.  I had an ultrasound at 8w and there were no signs on PCOS ovaries (I used to have the "string of pearls").  My bloodwork also doesn't reflect that of a PCOS patient.  I KNOW the weight loss is to credit for this success.  Good luck to you!

I started at 324lbs and a size 26.  After losing 100 lbs, I became pregnant with my first daughter, who was born in March 2011.  My second daughter was born in September 2013.  I have maintained a healthy lifestyle and now hover around 160lbs.  I would like to get back to the 140lbs before I became pregnant with my second daughter.  The sleeve literally gave me LIFE - two beautiful, healthy little girls.  My husband had his VSG with Dr. Marema on 10/1/2012 and is on his weight loss journey, currently down 90lbs.

It took a year and a half plus Metformin and Clomid for me to conceive my beautiful 5-year-old, when I was a pre-op.  About 18 months out from my DS surgery, I got pregnant VERY easily with no intervention, and I'm NOT one of the lucky super-skinny post-ops.  But obviously I've lost enough and had enough of a metabolic turnaround that pregnancy wasn't hard to achieve - YAY!

By the way, even if you have a history of infertility, it's important to use reliable birth control for as long as your surgeon recommends after surgery.  Usually it's between 1-2 years.  It's hard to imagine having an "oops" pregnancy when you've tried for years but it happens all the time, and while it's not always a bad outcome, it seems pretty hard on new post-ops to carry a baby during the early months post-surgery, not to mention the problem of getting enough vitamins and protein.

I wasn't TT****il this time (when I got pregnant on the second try, no fertility treatments), but my reproductive endocrinologist credits how easy it was for me to conceive on the fact that the weight loss eliminated all the PCOS symptoms. In fact, I was even expecting to be insulin resistant and diagnosed with gestational diabetes (I was insulin resistant before the weight loss) but I wasn't!
