washing clothes?
Pshah! Your MIL sounds as ridiculous as mine. lol. They are always so quick to tell you what you are don't wrong. (My then 80 year old MIL actually told me she would do a better job as a mother than me a 30 year old while I was still pregnant with my first baby. Don't you just love some MILs. ) Besides, in your case she doesn't do your wash, so why should she have a say?
Here are my thoughts (as well as what I do). Wash your clothes together, even if you change to baby detergent because you will be holding your baby and don't want them to have a reaction to your clothes especially when you might not recognize a reaction like that as being from your detergent. There's my 2 pennies. good luck to you.

I use all free and clear on all of our clothes because I have super sensitive skin. Especially when I was home I was doing laundry every day so I needed my clothes to add to Amelia's to get enough to wash. Now that I am back to work I only do laundry every few days. If I have something that gets spit up or poop on it I soak it immediately in a tub with either some detergent or oxy clean. I have a large front load washer so I try to wash a full load all the time. I have also found that a full load washes better and gets the clothes cleaner. I use regular dryer sheets for all of our clothes too. Of course if there is something that is really dirty (the clothes Chris wears to mow the grass etc) I wash them alone.
The only time I washed Amelia's stuff alone is before she was born and I was washing everything.

I wash and have always washed Tristan's clothes with mine. When DH are covered in car grease or something, they get done seperately. I am allergic to some laungry detergents so my pedi said to use whatever I use since he may have the same allergy. Mostly, children react to leftover stuff on their clothes like fabric softener or unused soap. If you use softener, I recommend dryer sheets since they have less residue that will stay on the clothes.
As for the comment about poop on the clothes..... if they are really that gross, I recommend rinsing them in the sink or toilet before you wash them anyway. Plus, you'll have poop and drool and spit up on your clothes too. It's part of being a mom!
Good luck.
