Update on glucose test (finger poke)

I think the meter was the problem. My sugars since haven't been bad. Fasting are a bit high, but...
After dinner 118
Fasting        102
AD                108
F                   110

Thought it was odd that my fasting could be higher than the  last evenings after dinner, but other than that I hope these numbers will be good for my  doc and won't mean I have GD or anything. If he wants me to go no sugar that's fine, I just don't want to have to worry about my LO or take dangerous meds. I'm worried enough about taking progesterone shots. (Though the progesterone is natural, and the latest studies show that babies whose mothers were on progesterone came out smart, they still don't have any studies I could find longer term than 10yrs.)

My Endo wants my morning fasting below 95...and they were averaging 92ish and he put me on insulin last week at night. Your doctor might be different. I had to take insulin the 1st pregnancy and its not bad...and I have bben in metformin for both preg. and it is not harmful to the baby. The way I llok at it is it is all about the baby..I DO NOT wnat the baby to grow too big too early adn that is one of the side effects of having high blood sugars...They should ahve you do a 3 hour glucose tolerance test....keep us updated!

Do you have a history of diabetes? That might be why they want your numbers so low. Anyhow, I can't  do a 3hr, that's why we are doing this. I can't take more than 12g or so of sugar without dumping. I don't really care about the size of the baby. She's a perfect size right now. I worry about giving her a higher risk of diabetes, breathing problems, low blood sugar, and jaunice that can come with GD even if it's controlled. I also worry  about long term effects on her if I have to take some sort of med. They might find out it's bad later in her life like they did with that old med from the 70s. DES I think it was called.
Ugh. Being pregnant is scary! Everything you do can affect your LO.
Parenting is hard even before they are born.lol
Thanks for the info.

Yes..I do have a history of diabetes...I don't care either how big the baby is but from what I understand if your sufars are high, the baby gets big...but it isn't just "big"  it grows faster than the organs....but anyways, I agree that I do not want any side effects for the baby!

Insulin is perfectly safe to take during pg...and having had a 9 1/2 pound and 10 1/2 pound babies I recommend doing whatever it takes to keep that baby healthy. The pp is right that the baby grows faster than the organs and then you are having to worry about having the baby early because of the size, but the baby not being ready (common issue is lungs).

That being said, there are ways to lower that fasting sugar without meds. If meds are needed it isn't because you are not necessarily eating well...but it is just your pg hormones whacking out...hence the reason it is called gestational diabetes and not type 2.

Try this. Eat a balanced snack in the evening before bed. Protein and a little carb. Like 4 crackers and 2 string cheese...or 1/2 piece of whole wheat toast with 2 T. peanut butter, or 8 oz of milk with a few ounces of peanuts. Also after dinner take a 15 minute walk. Taking 3 15 minute brisk walks a day can lower your bs 10-20 points on average...but the walk after dinner should help with metabolizing your food over night and get your own insulin working properly.

But remember, if you try these tricks and it doesn't help it is just your hormones and you might need that extra boost of insulin to keep baby healthy. And your sugars are barely high so you might only need one low dose shot in the evening. Good luck. Shari

Doc put me on Glyburide in the evenings though he hated to act so quickly  (he said he's not sure it means GD without taking the 3 hr, but he needs my fasting sugars to be under 90) because it only seems to be my fasting sugars that are the problem. I took my first pill tonight, but I think I'll call in the morning and ask him if I can take a few days to try to get it under control myself before taking another.
Thanks for the tips. GD is scary as heck!

My personal opinion is that glyburide has not been studied in humans and is considered a class C drug for pg. Also this website recommends not taking it within 2 weeks of expected birth date, and definately not while breast feeding.

http://www.drugs.com/pregnancy/glyburide.html

Also, if you decide with your doctor that you should stay on it, be aware that glyburide is usually taken with the first meal of the day. If you take it before bed, take it with food and be aware of what low blood sugar might feel like to you. Always have a quick sugar source ready and your meter handy just in case you wake up shaky...lows always woke me.

I think it is fair of you to ask for a few days to see how the other options work. Good luck.
