Question about BC??

I'm 5 months out from surgery and down 102lbs. My periods have been like clock work since surgery. I can't take the pills because I'm Bipolar and they screw with my moods and that can be bad. My gyno recommends Mirena, but I wanted to know what side affects others have had from it? Has anyone had issues with it shifting, or becoming dislodged while losing weight? I need to find something because even though we're being very careful, we had a condom break a few weeks ago and I was 9 days late this month. Took a Test this morning and it was negative and wouldn't ya know it I started spotting this afternoon. Any help would be much appreciated!

The Mirena also has a hormonal component. If that is what effects your moods, you may have issues with it too. Although, the hormones secreted form implanted devices are more gradual & don't have that peak & valley effect that BCP's do. There are several people on this site who have become pregnant due to an IUD that has become misplaced. I was considering Mirena, but have now decided on Implanon.  It is a device that is implanted in your arm & is good for 3 yrs. It also secretes hormones, but is Progesterone only.

I had a mirena, and I did like it. It worked wonderfully for 13 months until it dislodged and fell out. I didn't notice, my OB did when I went in for another problem.

The Paragard is an IUD that has no hormones, so it may be your answer. I had it for about a year. It makes your periods a little heavier and 2 days longer (at least for me) but no hormonal side affects.

I had no trouble with Mirena at all while losing weight. You can have some iregular periods or frequent spotting in the first few months that you have it, but it usually settles down and then you have lighter periods that may even disappear. it does contain hormones, but since it is a small amount and they are directly delivered to where you need them, it doesn't usually have the hormone related side effects that a systemic hormone like birth control pools can have. I had my last Mirena for 5 years and I had a new one put in about 10 weeks after my son was born. The other nice thing about it is, if you do decide to get pregnant later all you have to do is have it removed and fertility returns immediatly.

Implanon is probably NOT a good choice for you as it uses a higher dosage of hormones (I also had a 3 month long period with it and ended up having it removed).

RNY on 08/16/05 with
Just saw your post. I had my RNY 08/2005 and had a Mirena placed 10/2005. I had it in for 4 years before deciding to have it removed. I thought it was really great until the last 6 months or so. Then I felt like it was causing me some problems. (bloated belly, mood swings, acne, etc) Every once in a while I felt like it was poking me during sex too. Not sure...but I haven't felt anything like that since.

On the plus side, my periods got  lighter and lighter for a few months after it was placed, then they were gone completely. That was great!!

So, after having the Mirena removed in Sept. 2009, we got pregnant the first of Feb. 2010.

Good luck
Kina
