cervix opening due to previously being obese??

I have seen two different doctors since I became pregnant and both asked if I had had trauma to my cervix (which I haven't that I know of)...and then at yesterday's appointment my OB told me my cervix opening is increasing in size...which could lead to an incompetent cervix and often results in a 2nd trimester miscarriage or preemie birth.

Would my history of being obese...losing and gaining weight a million times...have weakened my cervix?

Apparently there is a surgery they can do for an incompetent cervix but my OB won't do it unless someone has had two miscarriages. I'm 33 and my husband is 50...we don't have time for miscarriages...plus I have already mentally bonded with this child.... I am busily looking for another OB...but am still quite worried.

Any thoughts? Anyone experienced something similar?

my son was a preemie born at 31 weeks and they think I may have had an incompetent cervix since I had no other risk factors (other than being obese).  This time around, I have to get transvaginal ultrasounds every 2 weeks to measure the length of my cervix.  If they find that my cervix is shortening, they will do a procedure called a cervical cerclage where they will basically sew the cervix shut to prevent early labor.  I also will be getting weekly progesterone injections.   I don't know if this is the surgery you are talking about, but thats their plan with me.  They said the procedure can be done under spinal or general anesthesia but the removal of the stitches is not bad so they do that when you go into labor.

My OB referred me to the high risk maternal fetal medicine people.  They are the ones who have come up with this plan.  Hope you get everything figured out!  Best wishes!

I mostly lurk, but I had to respond. I would demand a cerglage (SP). I would research the criteria for having one and make sure you fit the bill and then demand it.

I don't post too much here, but I had to respond to your post.  I think that what your OB told you is absolutely rediculous!!!!  Why in the world would you have to go through 2 miscarriages when the problem has been identified early.  PLEASE FIND ANOTHER OB!  I am sure that there are options for you.

Take care,

Your OB sounds like an idiot.  Why would he say he can tell what's going on...but won't do anything about it because you don't have a history of miscarriage yet?  Why WAIT until you do before doing something about it?  That's like sayng 'I can see you have breast cancer, but since you don't have a history of having it in the past, I'm not going to treat it now.'

Get a new dr...NOW.  Don't wait until you start having the mc history...it's NOT a road you want to go down when it can be avoided by a  simple surgery.

Go to a new doctor ASAP!!!  I have lost 2 babies, One at 22 weeks and one at 20 weeks, becasue my doctor gave me the same line of BS!!!  I went to a new doctor this time and they insisted I get a clerage.  I had one done on August 11th, and it is definatley piece of mind for me.  The procedure doesn't hurt either.  I am so happy I went to a new doctor this time.

DEFINITELY get another OB!  This one is not helping you.  Why should you have to go through a tragedy if it is possible to avoid it?  Ooh, he is an asshole!  Dump the chump and get a new one ASAP.

You did nothing to cause any issues with your cervix.  I do know several women who have dealt with incompetent cervix and they were all different sizes, and I know very large women who carried to term without issues.
