kidney stones
I need some help/advice with getting preg and kidney stones. My urologist says that since surgery i am now more likely to get kidney stones, ive already had 1 one each side. Dr has given me meds to prevent them, but he is unsure if I can be on it while pg. i looked up the med and it is a class C drug and it also limits fertility. I really wanna start TTC, but i dont wanna risk further kidney stones. I have been reading about herbal supplements that can help prevent, but I was wondering if any of you have had problems or know of other meds that I can take that will prevent them? I am increasing my fluid intake as much as I can, but I know that may not be enough. Thanks so much!!!
I can't help you except it is fuuny, (not really) that you posted this because I have a small kidney stone and was supposed to ahve it blasted right after my panni removal..and I never did....needless to say I am now pregnant with a complete surprise baby and noticed this morning my lower back is killing and there is a tinge of blood in my urine. They cannot do anything for me they say due to the pregnancy...

I did read about the lemonaide, it said to use a real lemon or the bottle of real lemon juice 1-2 times a day to help break them up. the article i read said the "fake stuff" doesnt work as well, so im suprised the crystal light worked. I currently have a sm stone on left so i think im gonna add lemon juice to my regimne for my day and hope to break it up before i get pg
Oh man, if it's kidney stones while pregnant you'd like to know about, I think that I am certainly your girl! My story is quite long and quite detailed but the jist of it is this... starting at about 16 weeks pregnant and probably 5-7 ER trips to finally diagnose what the heck was wrong with me, I was diagnosed with in-humanly passable kidney stones in BOTH kidneys that were so freaking lodged in the opening of my urethra that I was completely blocked up and dying in my opinion at the time. Worst pain of my life, FAR outweighed vaginal delivery without meds in my experience, never felt anything like it.
Once finally diagnosed I ended up with surgery at least once every two weeks, sometimes once a week to put a stent in and then take a stent out as my body rejected it every time within about a weeks period of time. But without the stent, I immeadiately would get clogged again and had to go back in under general anethesia to put it back in and then the week after, back in to be put asleep to take it out. Quite the process and everyone at ouotpatient surgery knew me by name at that point!!! But this process did get my through my pregnancy until I was able to have lithotripsy on both kidneys after I delivered the baby. And by after I mean before I even left the labor and delivery floor! LoL They got it done as soon as I was able to, although it did prevent me from trying to breast feed for several days as a result of the anethesia and medications I needed to take.
And to help answer your question about the medication, I was not able to take the medication while pregnant. Instead they had me do the diet whi*****luded an entie pitcher of lemonaid a day, I kid you not! I'm a lemonaid loving girl, but a pitcher a day was just too much even for me, but I tried my hardest!
Not to freak you out or anything, but within 3 weeks of my lithotripsy surgeries, I went in for another cat scan to find that both of my kidneys had stones in them again, although much much smaller than they were while I was pregnant. My urologist said something about my bypass and the pregnancy combined and my own naturally tendancy to be prone to stones is what caused the HUGE stones that weren't humanly passable. Since my pregnancy ended with the birth of my son two years ago, I have not once required surgery to combat my stones as they haven't grown large enough to need it, even tho they are stil there and cause me pain from time to time.
There is plenty more to my story, but that's the basics of it. It was quite the experience that lasted for almost 20 weeks and one hell of a roller-coaster ride that I went on and took my family along on with me. I wish you the best of luck and please let me know if I can answer anymore questions for you or be of any support. Like I said, there's way more I could share with you. I sure hope you don't have an ordeal like mine, but if you do, I'm sure you will get through it just the same!!!

I just bought something called "True Lemon" It is in little packets like sweet n low and come in a small box. They ewre in with the crystal lite stuff. One pkt is equal to a large lemon wedge and it is real lemon..they also have the pkt for lemonaid...hard to find, look it up online and they will tell you where to get it. Not sure if it will work, but I'm willing to try anything at this point!!

OMG Darcy what an experience, I do have a question though. Were they not worried about all the anethesia from all the stints they put in? wouldnt you have had less had they just done the lithotripsy? Are you planning on trying to have more kids? what do they want you to do then? I just had hernia repair 7wks ago and day i came home I was right back in ER with worst pain ever from kidney stones!!!! I dont ever wanna go thru that again, would rather go thru child birth again without meds( and i had c-section) Im gonna look for that true lemon stuff and maybe jsut start adding that to my big bottle of water everyday and see what happens
Ahhhh yes...
My son - Quinten STONE is 8 months old - I passed 11 stones the last month I was pregnant with him - never had them before! It was hell and I swore I'd never get pregnant again (I am 6 months preg!). I had the 5th surgically removed - it was 8mm - a little larger than a 1 carat diamond! the rest were not small they ranged from a poppy seed to the 8mm one.
I mostly was on pain meds for the big ones - I was peeing straight blood. I have a pretty high pain tolerance but the one I passed 2 hours after the tube was removed 3 days after surgery had me passing out, vomiting, peeling tiles off the floor of L&D, and wanting to cut my husbands penis off with a grapefruit spoon.
Pain management and surgery with a spinal is all you can do. This pregnancy I have cut out Ice Tea... one huge factor last time, I add fresh squeezed lemon to my water when possible, drink A LOT of water, and stay away from the major kidney stone causing foods;
rhubarb, spinach, strawberries, chocolate, wheat bran, nuts, beets, and tea... okay - except the chocolate. :)
if its any consolation... the moment I held him I smiled and said "Okay - we can do this one more time". :) Worth every bit of it!!
