WLS before or after pregnancy????

Hello all!
I am very interested in having WLS, but I'm confused as to whether it's best for me to have the surgery BEFORE having another child, or if I should wait to have the surgery AFTER my 2nd child is born????  On the one hand, I feel like it's best for me to go ahead with the surgery now and just wait 2 yrs before trying to conceive.... But on the other hand, perhaps it's best to have my children before having the surgery due to the potential for weight gain during pregnancy????  Honestly, I feel that I will be a much better mother to the child I have now (my precious daughter who is 2 and 1/2) if I get the surgery asap..... and I also feel like I'm not quite ready to care for another child while dragging around these 100+ extra pounds!!!!  BUT... I really want to have a safe and healthy pregnancy with my 2nd child....  I'm so confused.... I guess my question is this:  Is it better for me to get pregnant as an obese woman with the potential that I could gain even more weight or is it best to have the surgery, lose the weight, and then get pregnant after the 2 yr recommended wait time????  Are the pregnancy risks greater with obesity or after surgery (provided you wait until Dr says it's safe to conceive)?  Any advice is welcome and greatly appreciated!  Thanks!!!!

I definitely think there is a greater risk of complications when getting pregnant while obese.
A common misconception is that you are automatically high risk if you get pregnant after WLS, that couldnt be further from the truth. Often we are the healthiest we've ever been at that time, making it optimal baby making time! Could explain why its SO easy to get pregnant after WLS for so many lol!
Judging by your post, it sounds like you dont think you are better off getting pregnant before surgery, i say go with your gut!
Either way, good luck!! =)

Hey - thanks so much for the nice reply, and you're right - I really DO want to have the surgery before having another child! I will go with my gut... (here's to hoping that both my Dr's and my insurance company agree)! Your baby girl is gorgeous (and so are you)!!!! Your story is very inspiring.... and seeing so many stories similar to yours every day has made the option of WLS seem like an obvious one for me! I have tried every diet in the book, my BMI is over 43, and my increasing weight is keeping me from doing so very many things I wish to do for myself and my child!!!! Thanks again for your kind words.... I feel like I've finally found the answer to my prayers after so many years of defeat! Best wishes to you and your family!
Sincerely,
Leslie

It's also easier for most women to get pregnant after losing the weight too. I am high risk because of surgery BUT... the high risk OB I saw for my first trimester screaning wanted to make sure the baby was growing according to schedule. That just means monthly growth ultrasounds. Nothing else. Not having an issue with growth. I have a little chunk growing in there. LOL

Thanks Kathy! Congrats on your little future Buckeye! I'm a big Ohio State fan as well! Woo hoo - Go BUCKS! I was born in Ohio, and both my parents went to OSU, so.... I was born a buckeye, too! My daughter, Autumn, was born in Michigan (where I live now), but she's a Michigan born Buckeye fan!!!! haha.... Best wishes to you for a healthy pregnancy and a speedy delivery!
