TTC After RNY...Food Questions

I am 13 months post op, had to take my IUD out in June because it shifted. Hubby and I decided to TTC this month. I have NEVER O'ed on my own, first two children were fertility treament. We bought the ClearBlue Fertility monitor and sure enough I O'd this cycle! I am 5dpo atm.

My question is, my pouch is still pretty small, I haven't stretched it. What types of foods do you start eatting while pregnant to gain weight and make sure the baby is getting proper nutrition?

My weight/size stats are in my siggy.

Thanks!

~Heather

Congrats! Hope that you get great news.

You don't need to eat more at one sitting just more often. I was eating constantly it felt like! My OB, NUT and surgeon agreed on 1500-1800 calories, 90 grams of protein, 100 grams of carbs and at least 64 ounces of water.

The only significant change you need to make is to add whole grain carbs back into your diet. The baby is going to take what it needs irregardless, you need to get in enough for you too. Also make sure you are taking your vitamins; prenatals, B12,calcium, folic acid and iron (if necessary). You should get lab work drawn frequently.

You really just need to add about 250-300 calories to what you're already eating. Make sure you're getting at least 75g of protein, at least 100g of carbs (you don't want to be in ketosis...ketosis is bad for baby's brain development) and 64oz. of water daily. Switch to a prenatal vitamin from your multi-vitamin, make sure you're taking your calcium citrate daily, keep taking whatever type of B-12 you've been taking be it sublingual or monthly shot and have your Dr. check your labs to make sure you aren't deficient in anything before you get pregnant.

As far as what you eat, make sure you get your protein in first, get in good complex carbs...multi-grains...etc. and just make sure everything is healthy. I craved a lot of cheese and fresh fruit while I was pregnant. I swear I ate Wal-Mart out of red grapes! LOL My pouch seemed to be able to hold more during pregnancy than when I wasn't pregnant. Guess that was a good thing for me and for baby because I didn't know how I was going to get in enough calories for us both. I got in as much food as I possibly coud every day...which was about 1500-1800 calories a day even though I should've been in the 1,800-2,000 calorie a day range. (I am 6 foot and was a smidge over 200 when I got pregnant)

Good luck to you!

Liz and Allie, I am curious....... What is ketosis and what are the symptoms?  How can I avoid it also?  thanks!!

But Heather I DEF agree with Liz-eat more frequent but you dont change the portions, your pouch is still gonna be the same size unless you are binging on alot of foods, if I am not mistaken.  Best of Luck!!

Susie,

Ketosis is when too much sugar spills into your urine. Diabetics especially need to watch for this and you can test with Keytone Sticks.

Where can you buy the sticks and when's the best time to test?  I have had issues with HYPOglycemia but no high sugars.  Also had some Blood Pressure issues too with it staying too low also.  But I would like to have the sticks just so I know when it happens, IF it was to happen..

What do you do when it happens??  How do you correct the situation so tht it doesn't hurt the baby?

You can buy sticks in the Diabetic section,  but really, most people don't usethem unless specified by your doctor. If you are concerned about this I would highly recommend following up with your doctor.
