How far out were you when you got pregnant?
I was 7 months post op. We were using protection and birth control pills. Honestly, I never in a million years thought I would get pregnant ever anyways. I had gotten sick and my Family Doctor prescribed me an antibiotic. Well, it must have messed with my BC because I found out on May 10th that I was about 5 weeks along already. Everything has been going great with my pregnancy, and I wouldn't change this miracle for the life of me, but you really should wait to allow the major surgery you just had to help you. Luckily I was only 15 pounds from goal weight. I had already lost 130 pounds, but that is because I had lost 50 of those pounds on my own prior to sugery. We tried for 10 years to conceive, been through fertility treatments years prior to surgery, and even adopted our son at two weeks old (now he's 3 years old). It is very possible to concieve after weight loss surgery! I also beleive that timing is everything and that God has his plans for us at just the right time. Congrats on your successful recent surgery!

I had my RNY surgery on 1-6-2010 and turned 40 on 4-23-2010 and have lost 115 lbs as of today. It took my 3 years to conceive my daughter who will be 3 in October because of my bad PCOS. I used to have a 45 day cycle prior to surgery and now post-op, my cycle is a normal 28 days and I can tell a huge difference with the amount of discharge on my fertile days. I know your fertility increases after surgery and I am really looking forward to having a second child. I met with my RD yesterday for my 7 month follow up appt (I meet with her every month and my surgeon every 3 months now) and I asked her again when I could get pregnant and she recommended again that we wait until at least 12 months post op AND my weight has stabilized. So that means we shouldn't get pregnant until Janauary at the soonest and that means I would be 41 1/2 when I deliver baby # 2. It's so hard to wait - especially since I see so many people on this board who get pregnant within those first 12 months post op and have healthy pregnancies and babies. But I will wait and "follow the rules" because I want to give my body the best chance to lose as much weight as possible in these first 12 month "honeymoon" period. I wish you all the best!

Thanks everyone for sharing your stories. I feel more hopeful now. I'll keep reminding myself that what is meant to be will be.
i was 4months out when i got preggos. My doctors say baby will be just perfect if i keep my regimen of vitamins and get adequate nutrition we r not supposed to gain more than 15 pounds anyway so its not like u r starving the baby. yes it is wise to wait however if u get preggos it is a gift

HI MauiGirl,
I do have a recommendation for you. Now that you are 38, go for a consultation to a RE doctor to just make sure everything is good with you and hubby. I waited the year after surgery to start trying to get pregnant. I am 41 already and I have PCOS and slow thyroid.
Hubby and I started trying in January but no luck.. in June I decided to go to a RE to check everything out and Dr. thought it was a good idea to try to get pregnant due to my age and the PCOS. When results came back it was more difficult than we expected. I still have like 80 lbs more to lose (I have lost like 120 lbs) but this is my life dream to become a mom.
Right now I am in round 2 of treatment and my Dr only does the treatment 4 times. During the first round of treatment I happen to be going through a lot of stress and emotional moment dealing with the reality of what was in front of us and also I had a family issue that came all of a sudden and didn't know how to deal with it.
I am praying and hoping that if not this round one of the remaining ones will work for me.
But please please please... I will tell you not worry so much about it.. but just in case DO visit a RE to make sure everything is good.
I do believe that God has a plan for each one of us and it will happen in HIS time. I am trying to accept this fact myself... Hubby and I want a baby so bad..
Good luck...

I was at goal at 12 months out and wanted my surgeons okay to get pregnant...he told me that it would be better to wait until 18 months to 2 years. The RE gave me the green light at 18 months and I got pregnant on my second round of IVF at 2.5 years out. I was one of the few that did not ovulate after losing the weight due to PCOS.
I had lap band done on Jan 20th this year and I'm 34 years old and have baby fever like there's no tomarrow (at least 10 people I know are preggers or have newborns) I totally understand where you are coming from. At my 6month post op appointment I asked my doc if I could go off the pill and he said that was fine and there could be a chance that if I did get pregnant I may still lose some wieght. First time since I was 16 that I've actually had no birth control hormones so I guess we'll see what happens.
