Unintended weight loss during pregnancy
Hey all,
Was hoping for some advice or feedback. I had the duodenal switch surgery 1.5 yrs ago.
I gained 7 lbs in two months from the time I became pregnant. All of a sudden yesterday my boyrfriend commented that I look like I lost weight. I got on the scale and found out that lost 10 lbs in two days without even trying.
I have not changed my diet drastrically nor have I been eating substantially less but I have been suffering from nausea and I have cut out my 2-3 coca colas a day.
My OB said my weight started out on the high end 180 but that I should not lose any weight. From my 1st prenatal appointment on the 6th to today I have lost ten lbs.
Should I be concerned or are up and downs like this normal especially with Duodenal Switch patients? I feel like it was water weight that I lost because my abdominal swelling went down greatly with the weight loss.

You said you haven't changed your diet, you need too. Time to add more calories and carbs. The baby is sucking up all that you are putting in and you are getting the short end of the nutrition stick. I was 2 1/2 years out from RNY when I got pregnant. I was told 1500-1800 calories, 90 grams of protein and 100 grams of carbs a day.
Good luck!
Oh and it probably was water weight if you lost it overnight.

All I can say is I had RNY 5 months before I got pregnant. I was terrified. To date, (having csection in 15 days) I gained 3 lbs and lost them. So I havent gained anything. The good part is, my doctor said the baby is fine and growing and our body will feed the baby FIRST even before us. So we can be starving to death and the baby is getting food. His words exactly. The body is an amazing thing. No worries, just eat right.

Sudden weight loss in pregnancy is of some concern. I would say check with your doc. Don't stress too much, just make an apt and talk to him about it, he may want to do an ultrasound to be sure all is as it should be. Cutting out the cola and post bypass body can contribute to the weight loss, but you should check with the doc if the loss is that big.
Just my opinion, but I'm a paranoid mommy after having one preemie and now I worry about EVERYTHING. lol

Up and down a bit is normal, my OB said that about 30% of even non WLS patients lose weight in the first trimester. The baby is using an extra 300 calories a day and you may not feel well and might eat a bit less. Try to make sure you are eating 300 calories or so more than you used to. Replace the colas with something healthy!

I lost almost 20 lbs in my first trimester. Then my weight loss stabilized because I started adding way more carbs to my diet. Since hitting my 3rd trimester, I've started to gain about a 1/2 pound a week, or just staying steady at my current weight.

I'm like Starr: lost in the first trimester, stabilized in the second, and finally gained in the third.
I started my pregnancy at 173. My low was in the first tri at 166. Now I'm at 176 and contractions have started! So only up a net 3 pounds.
But everything we know about my baby says she's fine! Hopefullly I can confirm this in a few days. :)
