Anxiety Disorders?
Have any of you dealt with anxiety disorders? And if so, what type of treatment has helped? Did you see your PCP or a Psychiatrist? Did you turn to medications and if so, what have the benefits been?
I (and my family) have had a very hard year and though I've been on antidepressants for several years, the past yr has found me riddled with anxiety (both rational and irrational). I just started looking up AD symptoms on line and it's ME in the majority of the scenarios. It's to the point where it is now debilitating and I need to get control of my life again.
Please feel free to send me a PM if you aren't comfortable posting here. Any suggestions, advice or stories you want to share are appreciated.
Thank you,
Jo

I can't answer your questions, since I have no experience with it...but wanted to give you a hug and tell you I missed you! I hope things get better with whatever's been going on in your life...and that things improve with the anxiety disorder.

There are daily meds one being Buspar, but lots of others, that they can add to your antidepressants. Do not feel embarrassed or wierd about it. Most of the time depression and anxiety go hand in hand. Go see your PCP and tell them what is going on. They can manage your anxiety meds and your antidepressants. You may also need what they call a "rescue" or "break through" med like Xanax, Valium, or Ativan for those times when you just cannot get it under control. My PCP also recommends journaling, exercising, anything to try to break the cycle and get through the attack. He is big on the journaling because he says a lot of times that helps you to figure out who or what the boogie man is that is making you panic or have anxiety. I have had awesome luck with Lexapro and Buspar. I have a daughter on amitriptyline and Wellbutrin, and I have another daughter on Prozac, Temazepam at night it has anti anxiety properties and it helps you to sleep, so he gives her that as her worst panic times are at night. He does, however, prescribe all of us small doses of Xanax for the times when you just cannot get a hold of yourself. Do not worry that you are a freak....this is so common you cannot even imagine. Being in the medical profession for over 20 years I bet 80% or MORE of the population is on some sort of either depression or anxiety med...so its more common than not. I hope this info helps a little, and please feel free to message me at any time, as I know first hand what you are going through! I would not say you need to see a psychiatrist, but some counseling may help for a few sessions just to be able to talk to someone who is "outside" of your family situations and has no buy in on either side. I have done counseling sporadically. It did help at first, but then I kind of felt like we were going no where, so I quit going, but I think she gave me a good start on how the cycles of depression and anxiety work.
Again, I am sorry you are going through this, I know how it feels to have the "wanting to crawl out of your own skin" feeling. Take care and big hugs, and GO TO THE DOCTOR :)

Mom of 8, 7 teens or preteen girls and 1 boy (who wouldn't need meds) ROFL Again, I am here, even if you just need someone to yell at or soothe you when you cry...I totally get it!
I went through the same thing when Jackson was 18months. I had an allergic reaction to Topomax and it was very scary with the biggest side effect being panic attacks every 5 min. Right away they put me on Xanax for immediate relief and an antianxiety drug that would take about 2 weeks to take effect. The panic attacks went away, but unfortunatly the anxiety stayed for months. I talked with my doctor and they put me on a different. anti-anxiety med. It took a few months to find one that worked for me but it really did help. I did have trouble sleeping with some of the meds and had to use ambien at night. There are several drugs out there for a combo of depression and anxiety that they would probably put you on. I finally weaned off of the meds last Dec. right before he turned 3.
Sometimes anxiety is triggered by major events in your life and for me it was starting a new job and going to nights to be the only nurse on the floor. I still battle sometimes with the anxiety, but I found a verse in scripture that I pray and it really helps. Sometimes I have to say it over and over again, while doing some deep breathing but soon the anxiety goes away. The verse is "Be anxious for nothing but in everything, with prayer and supplication, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Phil 4: 6-7
Hope some of this helps. But def talk with your doctor, it helped me. Oh and at the time of the major crisis I did see a therapist for a few times until the meds kicked in.

I hope you get it under control soon. I don't take meds but if they help you then I would find one that doesn't have many side effects.
I started at 324lbs and a size 26. After losing 100 lbs, I became pregnant with my first daughter, who was born in March 2011. My second daughter was born in September 2013. I have maintained a healthy lifestyle and now hover around 160lbs. I would like to get back to the 140lbs before I became pregnant with my second daughter. The sleeve literally gave me LIFE - two beautiful, healthy little girls. My husband had his VSG with Dr. Marema on 10/1/2012 and is on his weight loss journey, currently down 90lbs.
