Ugh! Meds/RNY/Miscarriages?
I have been having a lot of trouble with morning...er...all day sickness to a point where I have lost weight and occasionally vomit blood.
My doctor prescribed Zofran which stops the vomiting but instead leaves me with a lot of cramping.
I can deal with the cramping but am afraid the meds might be somehow hurting the baby or increasing my chances of a miscarriage.
The doctor assured me that Zofran will contribute to neither -but when I look the meds up online they apparently have been tested for cancer patients but not specifically for pregnant women.
Has anyone taken this before and everything turned out alright...or does anyone have ANY suggestions for a different approach to help with the vomiting?
As a RNY person am I more susceptible to stomach issues or miscarriages?

Zofran is what the OBs perscribe regularly for extreme nausea, it's fine for the baby. Far healthier that Mommy eats!
As an RNY patient we are more prone to certain stomach issues (ulcers for one) but there is no link to miscarriages. If anything we typically eat healthier then the average preggo lady.
As far as helping with the nausea - keep something in your stomach. Oyster crackers were a god send - eat a few every few minutes. Sugar free altoids and warm diet ginger ale (the one made with real ginger, I think it's canada dry) were also a huge help. Good luck!

I am/have been a faithful Zofran user during both of my pregnancies. I LOVE it !!! I am also an Emergency Room nurse & can assure you that Zofran is our physicians' first anti-nausea drug of choice for pregnant women (we get a ton of pregnant women with hyperemesis). Zofran is chosen because it has less side effects in comparison to other meds in its class. The only reason some physicians don't prescribe it is because it is so expensive. In my opinion, it's worth every penny !!! I would also suggest making sure you get plenty of fluids. I know it's hard with the nausea, but dehydration can cause uterine irritability/cramping. I really struggled to get enough fluids in during my first trimester. I wish you the very best : )
