Vent: Pregnancy early post-op
You are right about the "sort of" part. I took it out of the OP. And this was a vent.. obviously not intended for women to defend themselves but obviously they would feel the need to. and those that have replied are exactly the women that are the "exceptions" to the rule.. not the one posting 4 weeks after surgery that oops they got pregnant while having sex in the recovery room kind of post.
Honestly Tabetha- Who are you to judge other people? The risks and concerns of a post-op pregnancy are between a woman and her doctor.
Some of us didn't choose to become pregnant so soon after WLS, what would you have us do? Should we all get abortions to make you feel better and reach our weight loss goals first???
I had a Mirena IUD which is practically pregnancy-proof when properly inserted and I STILL became pregnant 9 months post-op. So what? How is that any of your business?
Unlike you, I had VSG so there is no worry of malabsorption and I was within a few pounds of my goal. I have zero concerns of reaching my goal weight once my baby is born. It's obvious you had some issues if you are "still recovering". That isn't normal, even for WLS patients.
Most of the women I see coming here that are recently post-op are shocked and scared to find out they are pregnant. They don't need bitter, negative people like you to criticize them.
I'll pray for you. You obviously have some issues in your life to come here and post something like this.

Again, I did say there were exceptions. You obviously did take precautions and did not act irresponsibly. I have been on this board for a few years now and lately I just see an influx of "oops, I didn't think I could get pregnant 6 weeks post-op so we didnt use any protection"
This post was NOT directed at those who are responsible. Things happen. It's at those that are constantly posting "I just found out I'm pregnant... I didn't use any BC.. am I going to die!? type posts.
I actually do apologize for offending those that this post was not outright directed towards and for my original post not making it clear enough.

Also just wanted to add... pregnancies, just like life, are unpredictable. I hemorrhaged twice during my pregnancy. And because of my mal-absorption with vitamins/nutrients ( I understand you had a VSG so don't deal with this issue the same) I could not keep up my levels and am now going weekly for iron infusions and this week I also get a blood transfusion to go along with it.
Obviously, the pregnancy issue had nothing to do with the WLS... but what did happen to my normal levels of iron and other lab results BECAUSE i couldn't absorb properly made the numbers plummet in the end. And those that get pregnant early out don't seem to take this stuff into consideration.

Tabetha, sorry if I misunderstood or interperted you wrong, but I do have a question since you talked about mal-absorption. I'm 8 months out and had the same surgery you had...Is taking 1 prenatal vitamin good enough? I mean I take Calcium, DHA and Iron (Bifera) supplements, but not sure if just 800mcgs of Folic Acid is good enough. I guess I'm trying to prevent the issues you had with viatimin defi. Thanks for any information you can provide.

I was taking my supplements and my prenatal but with the bleeding that happened while pregnant it dropped all my levels and I became anemic. So now I see a specialist and we have me at the hospital ever week for IV infusions to help bring me back up to where I need to be because the supplements alone at this point will basically just restock what my body is currently using and not actually make the numbers rise.
Hi Gina!
All the research I've read in the past year says you should be taking 2000mg of Calcium citrate, 2000mg of vit D3, and 2 multivites. Also, I would double the dose on the DHA since they are now realizing how important it is early on in pregnancy. There may be other suggestions, but these are the bare minimums to make sure your basic levels stay good. RNY's basically malabsorb half of their vitamins. Have you have your levels checked since you became pregnant?
