Looking for some information on GTT after RNY. For some reason my OB doc feels that I am at an increased risk for gestational diabetes and so he required that I take a one hour GTT. I got the blood drawn at the office 1 hour after drinking the syrupy mixture. Got home about an hour and a half later and check my sugar... it was 73, so i thought no problem. Well PROBLEM....the next day i get a call that my one hour result was 147 and i now have to do a 3 hour GTT. Anyone done the 3 hour and how were your results??? Does our new tummy just process sugar slower, or what?? Luckily with the one hour I felt a little queasy, but not terrible. I'm worried about this test cause it's 100gm of glucose..YIKES!!!
Any help is appeciated!

From what I've heard here, drinking the stuff isn't accurate for RNYers.  My surgeon had me do the post pardinal (sp?) test, which is a blood draw 1 hour after eating a normal (for you) breakfast.  Had I failed that one, I would also have had to do a 3 hour test, but also blood draws.  I would DIE if I had to drink that much sugar at once.  Is there a way you could switch to a blood draw for the 3 hour?

My doctor is really great. He's been working with my surgeons office and only made me do a hemoglobin a1C blood draw. I will get the results on Friday. From what I hear it is not possible to get an accurate reaing from the glucose tests because our body processes sugar so differently. Plus it would really make some people sick.

Yeah, the glucose tests really don't work for post GB. Really you should check your blood sugar 2 hours after eating since we process sugar slower than normals. I always got normal readings at 2 hours after eating. If I ever tried to test 1 hour after, it was always a problem. I would suggest talking with your surgeon and having him/her discuss it with your OB. It's really crazy how much OBs DON'T know about how to treat post GB women. As many of us as there are out there, you'd think they would know more than they do about it.

Luckily, my doctor was great! I told him I didn't think my stomach would tolerate the glucose test, so he said I could just get my finger poked each time I go for an appointment and they'll check my blood then. He said  my urine's looking real good, so he's  not too concerned at this point....I love that man!! :)

Good luck!
