I'm new to this and want to plan so hoping you can let me know if anyone has gotten pregnant prior to their 1 yr surgery anniversary?

I had surgery 2/19/10 so 2/19/11 would be my 1 yr date but can we start trying like 3-4 months before that date?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You will probably get a lot of responses on this one and to make it short and sweet - NO do not get pregnant prior to your 1 yr anniversary date.

I got pregnant at 2 1/2 months post op and everything went great BUT it is still very risky!

Welcome to the board though! You will love it here! Feel free to hang out and get to know the ladies! It sounds like soon enough you will be one of us! :-)

I have to agree with Ashlie-it is not advised but it has happened!!  I was 8 months post op when we found out.  It is challenging no matter how far out you are, but there are LOTS of success stories but there are also some SAD ones as well.

This is a GREAT board to use as a reference, or to come and ask questions, vent, etc but you have GOT to have a close relationship with your surgeon, your NUT and your OB Dr too.

Wait as long as you can but Miracles DO happen!!

Yes you *can* get pregnant. But NO you should wait 18-24 months before trying (or until your surgeon gives you the "all clear").

I was 9 months post-op when I found out my IUD failed and so far it's been a HUGE struggle to get enough calories/protein in each day. I eat constantly and have still lost 10 lbs in the first trimester.

I definitely DO NOT suggest anyone try to get pregnant before their surgeon tells them it is safe to do so. Why put your health and your future child's health at risk?

I was told I'd never be able to have kids, so I didn't worry too much about it.  I got pregnant 9 months out of surgery, and while I'd never give my son back, I wish I could have had more time to lose weight.  My weight loss totally stopped, and I've never hit goal.  There is a reason they tell you to wait.  It is the best for your body.  Wait.  What's 6 more months?

Thank you ladies for your feedback!  It's nice to hear the "personal" stories b/c that's more convincing than the "medical reasons"

I really appreciate you very much for your time!

I'm going to go against the trend and say, 'It depends."  I had surgery in April '09 and got pregnant in Dec. '09.  My surgeon had cleared me for TTC because of my age at the time, 41 yo.  I don't think that any of us expected that we would be able to conceive so quickly.

I will say that unless you have concerning factors that it would be better and safer to follow the recommendations of your surgeon which is generally somewhere in the 12-24 month range.

41 is so much different.  Some gals on here in their early and mid twenties and are in such a hurry.  What kills me is that they say that they've been trying for like 10 years and they're like 27.

Still at any age, I would not be selfish.  You can be responsible for making your baby sick AND if you become depleted from the pregnancy and have issues long-term, will it come down to your child taking on the weight from a neglectful decision we selfishly made?

We really have to think and think beyond ourselves.

Glad you have your baby in your arms.

God Bless,
Leila
