Scared

Hi ladies... I am newb to this forum.  I am currenlty 17 weeks pregnant and have just started gaining weight and it is scaring the crap out of me.  I am 4 years post op and have done a good job of maintaining my weight through exercise but must admit over the last couple years have fallen victim to the food demons again.  I'm really trying to stick to a healthy, high protien diet but it has been a struggle.  I still walk daily but with the numbers going up on the scale I was hoping i could get some advice on how to stay on track with the last of self control for the cravings I seem to be having.  I needs something more than the obvious "eat your protien" "take your supplements" "avoid sugar"... I know all of this but it doesn't help my self control issues.  This is definitely more of a mental thing.

Hi, welcome & Congratulations on your pregnancy! I cannot tell you how many people on this board (myself included) have posted concerns about weight gain during our pregnancy. I am only saying that so you know you're not alone. Yes, you do need a lot of protein, but you also need carbs (at least 100 grams a day). That was really hard for me because carbs are what make me gain weight the most. I haven't completely avoided sugar. I have craved sweets. But I do think that the surgery has definitely helped me keep my weight down for this pregnancy. If I could have eaten more, I would have. But I just haven't been able to. I have gained a total of 36 pounds (as of last weeks appt.) I am scheduled to be induced tomorrow night so I am at the end. I am very pleased with the amount that I have gained. But it has taken me a while to be pleased about it. When the scale hit the 200's again, that was really hard for me to see. I just wanted to tell you that I totally understand the whole mental aspect of it, but I have to keep telling myself, I am not going to weigh 330 again because of this pregnancy. Even if I don't get back down to my lowest after she comes, it will be worth it because I have little girl.

I wish you luck. Stick around this board. There are lots of great ladies on here with great advice.

I don't really have any advice either. Just wanted to let you know you're not alone. I had my RNY in 2005 and got to my goal in 10 months and have pretty much maintained that since then. So, I get pregnant (not planned) with my first (and last) and when I started gaining weight, I kind of flipped out too. I felt like I had gone through all that for nothing! I just feel like I'm getting fat again. I can't stand to look at myself in the mirror. It doesn't look like a "baby bump" to me, it just looks like my fat belly coming back. But, this one, I can't suck in!! LOL

I'm just trying to stick to the guidelines my doctor has set as normal weight gain for someone with my starting weight (25-30 pounds). So far, I've gained about 16 and he says that's very good. I'm trying not to obsess about the weight. I just keep thinking about the exercise I'm going to get pushing my darling new baby boy around town in his stroller. Not the  mention all the extra work around the house!

Anyways, congratulations on your pregnancy. Everything will work out fine. Take comfort in knowing you can come here any time and get great advice and VERY honest opinions (like it or not). There are some great women on here full of experience and advice.

Best wishes,
Kina

Thank you very much for a little peace of mind.  I knew that I wasn't the only one who feels this way and it is nice to know that there are people out there that understand the struggle.
