Hey guys, I have a quick question. I had  DS. My OBGYN states that she has read studies that weight loss surgery patients have an increased risk of a bowel obstruction with natural labor do to the change in our intestines. She is considering doing a c-section instead of letting me have vaginal delivery!! Does anyone know any info on this. How did yawl deliver. I told her I would do some research on my own!! I need advice from the pros!! I dont care if I need a c-section. I just want whats best for the BOTH of us!! Hugs to all Brinahrn

As far as I know, you do not need a c-section.  I would not let the OB push you to that option right off the bat.  I was going vaginal all the way until my little one changed positions and ended up with one anyway.  I am not a professional but in my opinion there is no medical need for a c-section.

I had a vag del just fine and so has a ton of people on here. Don't opt for a c-section if you can have a vag. delivery!! Why would you??

Hi there,
I have never heard that. Ever. I was 4 years RNY post-op when I had my baby vaginally. THere is absolutely no need to opt for a C Section just because you are a WLS surgery patient. I would for sure do some research on this. Good luck!

THe first thing that my RNY surgeon told me when I told him I was pregnant was don't let them tell you you need a c-section because of your RNY. I delivered my little girl vaginally at 3 1/2 years post op without any problems what-so-ever. She was a bit stuck so I pushed for 3 hours with no progress then they brought out the vacuum and had her out in 3 pushes.

Good luck

Never heard of that either. My Dr's practice has many post WLS patients and we're teaching them - smaller tummies don't make us any les human or women - just means our vitamin and iron levels need to be monitored. My Dr said he has had issues with 2 of his post WLS patients, I was one - but my issue had nothing to do with WLS - I had 11 kidney stones. The other lady had a bowel obstruction during pregnancy, but delivered vaginally.
C Sections are major surgery, you can't drive after, you can't lift after... it's so hard on your body at a time when you need all the strength you can muster. I feel for C section Moms - that's hard!!
I did Hypnobirthing both times and hired a Doula - will do it again. no drugs, wondeful, amazing, memorable, funny, my body, my birth! No hospital or Dr will tell me what I can or can't do! :) Power to the Mommy!!!

I think your OB is full of **** because if you are at high risk for bowel obstruction, as WLS patients are, the last thing you need is another abdominal surgery when it's not indicated.  Sectioning you for a potential problem that could occur from labor but is obviously not super-common, as evidenced by the many women here at OH who have problem-free vaginal deliveries, seems really over the top, frankly.  If you had had problems that would clearly be aggravated by labor, that's one thing, but this is really a weird reason for a c-section, and while a c-sec isn't the end of the world, I think you are in for one with this OB for sure.  If you would like to avoid one, you may want to transfer care.

A vaginal birth is usually much safer for mom and baby.

ETA:  I had DS and I am attempting a vaginal birth after a cesarean, with my care provider's blessing.  My bariatric surgeon says there is an increased risk of bowel obstruction after WLS during pregnancy, but it should NOT interfere with delivery.  The risk is from your bowels getting smushed up by a growing baby, NOT labor contractions.

You have time to switch OBs and I hope you consider it.

I agree w/ all of the pp! I have never heard of this before. You should plan for a vag delivery and try your best to have one if at all possible. It is the best way to go!

Honestly, I'd demand your OB show you those "studies" she claims to have read. Csections are major surgery, don't let her bully you into something without showing you evidence to back up her claims.
C-Sections are easy, doctors/hospitals get paid more money to do them. However, they are NOT in the best interest of you or your baby unless medically necessary.
