An Update from Leah!!
Hey Ladies,
I hope everyone is doing well. I see some familiar names, but most of you are pretty new to me. Congrats on all the new babies, and good luck to the pregnant and soon to be pregnant mommies!
I am almost finished with nursing school!! YAY! I am currently doing a summer internship with the hospital. I finish my clinical experiences in December, and sometime after the first of the year I will sit for the NCLEX and be an RN! I am so excited.
Currently my internship is in the NICU. I love it. I love it. I love it. We take some pretty critical babies at my hospital, no surgeries, but just about everything else will come through our doors. I have seen 28 week babies, who struggle at first, but eventually make it through the struggle and go home to excited if not a little nervous, families. Anything under 28 weeks that delivers at our hospital is sent to Children's, where they have more resources for smaller babies. I have seen some of those babies deliver, and it is amazing to see something so tiny.
I think the hardest cases I have had to deal with are the withdrawal babies. I have learned that some drugs hardly affect the babies at all, while others are pure torture. Babies born to Methadone Moms are some of the worst. It takes forever for them to wean off the meds that we have to give them to get them through the pain of withdrawal, and they are sweaty, screaming, tremoring messes the whole time. It is sad. They stay a long time too, so we get the chance to become attached to them, just to send them into a situation we arent always so sure about.
Still, even at its worst, I love the place. I am fairly certain that I will be hired as a nurse in the NICU in January. I also really love Labor and Delivery, so I could always work there, if the NICU thing doesn't work out.
The boys are good. Ephram will be four in a month. I can hardly believe it! He is so smart, and very charming. Simon is two and a half and quite a force. He has just conquered potty training, and now feels like he can do anything. Together those boys will take on the world.
So, that is it from me ... for now. I am debating about another addition to our family...Once school is done, the possibility becomes very real. I just have to decide if we want to do that again, or if we are done. I change my mind daily. :)
Be good!

As a mother to 30 week preemie twins who spent 6 weeks in the NICU, I want to say Bless You for being a nurse an wanting to work in the NICU!
Our nurses were some of the most amazing, caring, loving, brilliant people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. I really takes a special person to do what you do and I wish you nothing but success with your career!
