GBS and Breast Feeding Issues

My daughter is 2 weeks old....we had the best luck latching and breast feeding for a little while...but now, as I pump I am only getting 1/2 to 1 ounce....a lot of people this far out are getting 4-6 ounces and I am sooo upset about this!

i asked the dr why I am not producing that much milk he said its because I cant eat and drink enough.  I have been trying so hard to eat 2300 calories (the recommended amount) and drinking 64 ounces but I cant do both!!  If I focus on eating I dont get enough to drink and vise versa....not to mention I am stressing about being a failure...so this isnt helping my stress or milk production.

My dr has recommended that I just feed her formula and allow her to nurse when she wants until I dry up completely...

Whats your take on this?  Are there any magic remedy to bring in my milk supply?

Fire your doctor.... seriously. Formula =/= breastmilk.

Babies are much more efficient at removing milk from the breast than any pump, just because you're only getting 1 ounce, doesn't mean she can't get more from nursing.
There are also herbs you can supplement to boost your milk supply. Try contacting your LLL or hospital lactation consultant before giving up.

I had 0 luck pumping and I have successfully nursed my daughter to 10 months old, not a drop of formula.

Fenugreek is a great supplement to add, really boosts milk supply. I take 3 caps a day, to make up for the malabsorption.

Your doctor, i'm sorry to say, is an idiot. FInd a breastfeeding friendly doc and tell this dude he's fired.

I agree with the PP's. I was the opposite, Emad wouldnt latch for the first few weeks so I had to pump and use a bottle and then at 6 weeks it just clicked...possible because he was born a few weeks early but who knows. Fenugreek is a great supplement...you can get powder, pills, teas to use. You can also make oatmeal chocolate chip lactation cookies which you can google for the recipe. They have brewer's yeast which helps production. Also, there are RX meds but I know some people would prefer not to use those. I successfully BF Emad for a year and it was hard and I also never got more than a few ounces from each breast at a time and on a rare occassion would get more if I maybe skipped pumping. If you HAD to you could supplement with formula or it may work out. It is so hard and it sounds like you are trying your best. You are not a failure by any means. The fact that you are asking for advice and help shows you do care. Good Luck.

Don't give up on breast feeding. I nursed 2 babies pre-op for 1 year each and was never able to pump more than an ounce. I am currently nursing my 5 month old(my post-op baby), I do supplement with formula if I go out and am unable to take her with me. However, I did not start that until breastfeeding was well established.

Keep breastfeeding, is the baby growing at a good rate?  If the baby is growing, you have plenty of milk!

Best of luck!

First of all, read this -

http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/pumping_decrease.html

What you pump, does NOT equal what you produce. Someone NEVER respond to the pump or can pump milk at all, but are able to successfully feed their babies for well over a year. The only way to tell if your baby is getting enough is by wet diapers and the way baby responds at the breast -

Get a new ped ASAP, the one you have is an idiot about nursing, and I would be afraid of the other advice they might give you in the future on other important issues. Women in 3rd world countries successfully feed their babies, and they don't get near the amount of calories that we do, your body will make milk like it needs to, just make sure you are getting enough fluids.

If you are interrested in trying Mothers Milk Tea (which is a supplement that will help if you really do have a low supply), drop me an email with your address and I will send you some. BUT the best way to increase your supply is to cut out any and all bottles and supplementing and nurse, nurse NURSE! Breastfeeding is supply and demand, the more you demand of your body the more your body will make, the more bottles you give your baby the less your body will make, period. Especially if that bottle is filled with formula.
