My Body Works Opposite

OK....they finally determined that I, in fact, was borderline with gestational diabetes.  I am monitoring 5 times a day.  What I am finding out, is that my sugar plummets to the 40 and 50s when I eat carbs and goes out of sight when I have protein.

I ate a meatball and half of a small piece of bread the other night......which I thought would be a good combination to keep the sugar in check.......thought wrong.  It was about 15 carbs and 9 protein.   tested 2 hours later, my sugar was 184.

I had an appointment with my surgeon yesterday and he said that he just came back from a conference where they discussed this exact thing.  It has something to do with the insulin and how fast the bosy produces it.  At any rate, he doesn't believe that I need to be treated fo GD.  But the monitoring of my sugar and my food diary will help him after the baby is born to determine what we need to do for me.

I've been trying to tell him for three years that something is wrong......I feel weird after I eat protein (that's when I can eat).  But he kept saying it was impossible!

Could this be reactive hypoglycemia??  or is that something different?

I called the dietician today and she said to try and balance the carbs and protein, so they off set each other.......no luck yet today, but I'l keep plugging away.  I truly hope that this weird thing doesn't have an effect on my little one........

Thanks for listening!

at least they are figuring it out!

Reactive Hypoglycemia is when you eat carbs your blood sugar quickly spikes then the body reacts, releases insulin and your blood sugar plummets. I've had it many times unfortunately. Try to balance out the carbs and protein and that should help. I try to match them bite for bite and it does well for me. Remember things like veggies and fruits are high in carbs too. It also depends on what kind of carb it is - white carbs are processed more quickly into sugar and whole grains take longer.

http://www.meltingmama.net/ - suffers Reactive HG (not pregnant) and has tips on there somewhere too

I know broad ranges of blood sugars are hard on our bodies I would imagine that it is tough on the baby too but not sure how it effects them directly

Good luck!
