NURSERY ?
I am trying to pick out a theme or colors for our nursery, and people keep telling me not to buy a set of crib bedding that has a bumper pad?? So far, they all have one? I used one with my daughter, but I guess you aren't suppose to anymore? I was thinking maybe just pick out some cute sheets, blankets and decorations, and maybe skip the crib set. I just don't see the point in spending all that money if I can not use all the pieces. What do you guys think?
Well, it's supposedly because they can use them as a "leg up" to try and climb out of their cribs. Also, I guess if you got real technical about it, they could roll up against it and get their heads stuck up against it and suffocate? Who knows. I've always used one and just took them when our babies were able to pull up. Cuz face it, when they are ready to climb out of that crib, bumper pad or no bumper pad.....they WILL find a way out if they're bound and determined! LOL Our 5th baby will have a bumper pad just like the other 4 did, but I'm making my crib set this time and my bumper pad will be very thin and firm....nothing they could accidentally get their face buried in.
The bumpers have been linked to an increased risk of SIDS and when the child is mobile and able to stand on their own, they might be able to use it to boost themselves over the side of the crib. Here's what I did: I pushed the bumper down between the mattress and the sides of the crib, so only about 2 inches of it stuck up. That way it kept little legs from sticking between the bars, but let more air flow in. It does make changing the sheets a bit more of a challenge. The other option is, just don't use the bumper. If you have concerns about little legs and arms getting stuck between the slats, get one of these: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3491557&CAWELAID=322246369

I talked to my pediatrician about this and he said it's OK to use bumpers as long as they are very secure on the crib. There are so many things out there that we're not supposed to do any more. We all had bumpers and we're fine. I am trying to be smart about real risks but not to be overly concerned about every thing. That's why I asked her pediatrician.
