New to this forum! Excited about # 3 !!!!!!
Hello ladies! I had RNY in April 2009. I just found out , 2 days ago, that my husband and I are expecting # 3. We have two boys ages 6 and 3. We are very excited and hope for a girl. I was wondering if anyone has advice for getting enough calories? I already have trouble getting 700 calories a day... I thought I read somewhere that I should be getting 2000 a day while pregnant, is that true? How do you do it? Also, has anyone had trouble with hypoglycemia since surgery? I battle it daily and now that I am pregnant, the attacks are non stop. I never find anything that really gets rid of these attacks, my nut said eat carbs , my surgeon said eat carbs AND protein, nothing ever works. If I have a piece of hard candy, like my mom suggested, it helps but it takes a while. I was thinking of sipping soda for the sugar and carbs but I don't want to start on soda. What about vitamins? So many questions! My husband is military and we just moved to a new duty station and I have not found a surgeon here yet. I have been searching and searching and my insurance/tricare, wants me to get a referral through my primary and my primary insists that I don't need a surgeon. Any advice? Thanks ladies!

Soda would be a big mistake to start.
And please, for your long term success - stay away from white carbs (white bread, white rice, white pasta - instead use whole wheat and multigrains. Complex carbs are what you should be focusing on as they take longer to break down and help to stabilize the blood sugar - eating protein w. complex carbs complicates the system in a good way even better. Your blood levels won't be so quick to crash when the digestion process becomes more complicated with food it really has to work for.
Eat Whole natural foods!!! The closer they are to the earth, the better. Processed food is "fast food" that is the reason most of the population is getting obesity related diseases - this population sadly includes children and adolescents who are getting diseases like adult onset diabetes. It is a pity.
Read some books on whole foods.
Many blessings,
Leila

Congrats Michele!!!! I have the same challenges as far as calories are concerned and I was told to up my calories cause I got preggers too early out (7 months from RNY, which I recommend to no one). Leila is right , get the good carbs in and don't look to soda for anything your body or baby needs. I've up'd my calories to 1695 until I meet with my Nutritionist to stay out of Ketosis. I've heard others say their nutritionist says 2300 calories..., but it's vital that you do as much as you can to get the calories in (good calories****il you meet with a nutritionist. Eat often , but don't kill yourself doing it. When they found ketones in my urine a week ago...that scared me into the point i was eating till it hurt, but I've learned I didn't have to do that. Now I just get the right calories in and pace myself :) Good luck sweetie and AGAIN CONGRATS.

Thank you Gina! Can you tell me what you eat? I can't fathom that much food! It also scares me and I think if I eat too much I will gain weight! That bothers me! What are your meals like?

It scared me too. I mean when I was told 1695 I was like I barely get in 800 let alone doubling that and why the odd number. Some days i can't quite get the 1600+ in, but I try...I use "The Daily Plate.com" to track my calories, etc. and the below is a sample of what I get in..I'll use today's food so far...
Breakfast - 2 egg (eggland's best) veggie omelete with 2ozs of cheese.
Early Morning snack - Activia Yogurt and some "Barenaked Granola" sprinkled ontop
Lunch - 1/2 a turkey and swiss sandwhich on weigh****chers wheat bread (added mayo..I need the fat and some mustard) and about 2 oz of Progresso Homestyle Chicken Soup (the low sodium)
Mid-day snack - Cheddar Cheese stick and a hand full of Nut-trition South Beach diet nuts.
Dinner - 1 slice of cheese pizza (only cheese and dab the oil off of it)....
Dessert - Some grapes for my sweet tooth (wink), but being honest I also grab some 100 calorie cookie snack packs from time to time in place of fruit.....(wink)

Actually EATING sugar or drinking it can cause some RNY folks to have a reactive hypoglycemia. I second someone else's advice about getting GOOD carbs.....whole grains, no white stuff and couple that with protein. You'll keep your sugar up better with complex carbs (milk, whole grains).
And congrats on your pregnancy!
