Did anyone's OB send you to specialist for baby growth?
I saw a perinatologist from week 12 up until week 36 and then delivered the next week. I got ulstrasounds 2-3 times a month to monitor growth and development. I delivered my son at 37 weeks and he was 6 lbs 7 oz. I was 5 years post op so getting good nutrition but they still insisted which was fine by me because I enjoyed the extra peeks at baby!
My midwives requested I have a third trimester growth scan because I had high BP in my first pregnancy and because of my WLS, but I haven't had to see a perinatologist or anything and I don't want to unless my BP goes up or I have any other complications. Otherwise I want pretty basic, low-intervention care if possible.
This is my 5th baby and 1st post-op baby. My OB said we'd start growth ultrasounds at 24 weeks due to not just my WLS, but the fact that I've suffered A LOT of malnutrition issues and numerous deficiencies during my past 3 years of post-op life. Well, we started at 25 weeks, but I was referred to a maternal fetal specialist after I got my AFP results and I've seen her twice and she does very detailed ultrasounds each time. I saw her at 31 weeks this last time and she wanted me back at 35 weeks (which is Tuesday) to check on her growth again.
I started with a new OB at 33 weeks and he did his own ultrasound as well and checked her growth. I was very concerned that she had only gained 5 oz. in 2 weeks. She went from like 98th percentile to like 43rd. I'm anxious to see how her growth is on Tuesday. I see my maternal fetal Dr. AND my OB that day. I am just hoping that they won't have to deliver her early because of any drop in growth.
I think if I hadn't had the history with malnutrition and deficiencies, I don't think they would've treated me any different than any other pregnant woman. The baby WILL take what it needs and the mother will suffer before the baby will. Most growth issues don't happen because we can't eat a lot. Growth issues are usually issues with the umbilical cord or placenta. If women from 3rd world countries that live in famine can have normal weight babies, WLS patients can too! Same for breast feeding. I think OB's just like to be super overly cautious........and that's ok by me when there's a baby involved. I just sit back, relax and enjoy the extra peeks at my girl! lol Especially since this is likely my last pregnancy.

Well I knew someone after WLS who became pregnant (granted it was during the 1st yr) snd her child has had numerous medical issues over the last 4-5 yrs I believe he's still on a trech so I'm ok with being extra cautious! I just felt that my labs were normal baby heartbeat is strong and I've gained almost 10 lbs that besides the extra calolories (700 instead of 300 increase) my prenatal plan would be "normal" so this just threw a slight wrench...but extra views of the little one? I love it!
I went in for my first trimester screening and the High risk OB said he wanted to see me back monthly after the anatomy scan. He is doing it as a precaution and will continue to see me even tho this kid is in the 85th percentile. Not a problem for me since I get to see pics every month.
I shall now be know as Hagatha: Queen of the queens.
Baby 7-09
Xavier Elliott born 10-5-10
My doc started sending me to get growth scans once a month starting at 18 weeks because of the RNY. They still want to see me every month even though they are now more concerned with the fact that she measures really bid (90th percentile). I too, just get happy about the extra peeks at my little girl. I have a whole little album of ultrasound pics I get to include in her baby book.
