How much is your lil one eating

Hey ladies, I have a question on amounts your baby is eating.  Today Stajah is 12 weeks old.  She still only eats about 2oz at most feeds.  And that amount takes a good hour sometimes hour and half to do.  Of course, she is growing and is now 11 pounds.  Still only poops about every 5-7 days (used to be 3-4).  I give her water which I know reduces the amount of milk she will drink throughout the day, but alot of people tell me she should be eating more by now.  Today was the first day I gave her any juice.  I did becuase she has been struggling for days to poop..  I gave her a very small amount in her water (PS It worked, she pooped).

I do free feed her, but her feeding have been becoming pretty routine. Here is what she ate yesterday (a typical day)

Wake up time 5:30-2oz breast milk
Nap 1- 7:30 1-2oz of formula (this was a long 2 hour nap)
Water-1 1/2 oz
Nap2- 1pm 2oz of formula (this was a 1 1/2 nap)
water-1 1/2 oz
Nap3- 6pm- 2-3 oz of breastmilk (short 30 min nap)
Nap 4 8:30- 1-2oz formula (short hour nap)
Nite time-midnight 1oz formula
Nite feeding 1:30 1/2 oz breastmilk
Nite feeding 3:30 1/2 oz breastmilk
 And wake up time again...

So how does your little one compare to this amount of food?  Just curious.  Every couple weeks she seems to take a lot more in for a couple days (think during growth spurts)...then back to close to this routine.

Thanks in advance-Stacey

Wow - well my little piglet is almost 7 weeks and eats 4oz every 3-4 hours. Our typical day is like this

6am wake up - 4oz sometimes she'll go back to sleep for a bit
9am - 4oz
12 noon - 4oz then a 3 hour nap
3pm - 4oz sometimes she'll take a 1 hour nap here
6pm - 4oz
9pm - 4 oz then to bed
somewhere between midnight and 1 am - 4oz back to bed
between 3-4am 4oz and back to bed

I'm not an expert but maybe take out the water and give her formula instead?

Amelia poops about 3-4 times a day now and has a good wet diaper with every feeding if not more. She was 8 pounds at birth and 10 pounds at her 4 week appt.

Is Stajah falling asleep after the 2oz? Burping?  I know I save changing Amelia for her burping in the middle of the feeding because 1) she usually poops then 2) it wakes her up so she finishes her bottle.

Wow your lil lady is growing.  Stajah has doubled her birth weight of 5 1/2 pounds and is 11 pounds now.  She is very bad at falling asleep after just a lil bit, during the day, I try to keep her going.  She burps after formula, but not so much after breastmilk.  Dr. says that's not unusal and she doesn't have to burp everytime.  Thanks for your info....

when I met with the lactation consultant in the hospital she told me to rub the back of the baby's neck, there are little fat deposits there, while they are eating if they fall asleep too early. I'd give that a try. She also told me to take baby's clothes off and make it so they aren't so snuggly and warm when feeding to encourage a longer feeding.

Good luck!

I am really surprised at how little she eats and how little she poops!! It looks like she is only eating 11-14oz which doesn't seem like much. I have also heard you should not give a young baby water or juice but I could be wrong. What has her Ped said?? Annie would eat like a pig about every 2 - 3 hours during the day until she was about 4 1/2 months old. (But slept thru the night by 3mo.) She pooped a few times a day until about 4 1/2 months old also. Now she holds on to a lot more and eats much less and poops every other day. I think by 3 months old she was eating about 4oz 6-7x day = 24-28oz in 24 hrs. Good luck with your little one!! I hope it's totally normal! Keep us posted because I'm curious!

I have heard the same thing abou****er/juice, too young, but her ped actually pu****er in her diet about 4-5 weeks old because of the pooping.   Also, he said if she goes every 7 days we are good, some babies don't go as much with breastmilk, but she is about 50/50.   I go Wednesday for surgery and when I speak to the Dr. I am going to ask him.  He is the top expert in my opinion, so I am hoping he will shed light on the subject.  I thought I would ask because it just didn't seem like a lot.  Dr. says she is gaining weight so that's a positive.

Thanks for your input!

Sorry, but if you ped thinks this is OK, you need to find a new ped. That is entierly too much water for a small babe and can cause an electrolyte imbalance, which could be the reason she does not eat well and falls asleep while eating.

The rule of thumb is about 2 (some say 2.5, but I think that is a bit excessive for most babies) x babies weight for the MINIMUM she should be taking in, so she should be takeing in at least 22 ozs of forumal or breastmilk (or more then that according to some).

I think you are getting very bad advice on the water, and should call a different doctor, even for a small baby 5 to 7 days is a LONG time to go with no poop, especially if they are partically breastfed.

Thanks for the weight guidance. when we go Wed ( Childrens hospital) I am going to get some more information. Even on her good days when she eats alot its not that much. The water has always been a concern, but I never seen side effects so thought it was ok. Def going to get the other dr opinion and figure this out. Thanks again

Stacey,

Jakob will be 12 weeks on the 15th and he drinks 4-6 oz of formula every 3 hours during the day and 6 oz at his 9:00pm or 12:00 midnight feeding. During the night he awakens twice for about a 2 1/2-3 oz feeding each time. Jakob had 1-2 oz of water for the first time this week when the temps were over 100 degrees and we had spent some time outdoors. I'm not expert but I only let him have it once a day and under the code red alerts for temperatures.

He also poops about twice a day sometimes only once. Hope that helps some.
