Breastfeeding question
I may be pregnant already but am in the 2 week wait to be sure...I do have breastfeeding question since I've seen some posts on here about not being able to produce enough milk supply since having rny...is this true for most women who have had rny trying to nurse, that they have to supplement or stop breastfeeding due to lack of milk production/supply?
I have successfully exclusively breastfed my baby. I had two pre-op babies that I breastfed also.
I would say that the only difference I've noticed is that my breasts don't feel as full and I didn't have a problem with engorgement with my post-op baby (which I had with both my pre-ops). I think this is probably just because of them being saggier from the weight loss. Even when they haven't felt super full, I'm amazed at how much milk I produce.
I think it seems like a lot of rny patients have trouble producing enough milk because people post when they have a problem and need suggestions, so that's what we see talked about.

I have had 2 post op babies who never had any formula and did just fine on breast milk alone. One for 18 months and one for 2 1/2 years. I think that for a lot of the women who struggle post op to nurse that it can be from a lack of fluid. Some women have a hard time drinking enough. I drink 120 oz a day on average. Good luck!
I had my daughter post op and breastfed for 6 months, and then I decided to stop on my own. Eat right and drinks lots of water and I think you will have a better chance for success.

I think that like all "side problems" that go along with pregnancy, what we have here is a good sampling of the population. The BF problem, like hyperemesis, preeclampsia, and even miscarriages... is individual and has nothing to do with our gastric bypass.
I did have problems BFing my son and ended up supplimenting and then switching to formula... they aren't quite sure why... just me!
I think with rny, the biggest issue is making sure you stay hydrated and well nurished so you can do your best. Good luck.
