Seriously Worried - I keep losing weight

I was about 7mo post WLS when I got my BFP. It was an unexpected surprise to say the least. I knew I'd lose some weight in the beginning so I didn't worry when I went from 213# down to 196# by the 2nd trimester.

After reaching that 196# mark I seriously leveled off and maintained between 197-199# for about 3 months. Then 3rd trimester hit and I started gaining a bit again and got back up to around 208#.

I was good with all of it and even expected some more weight gain as the weeks continued through the 3rd trimester.

Now I am 37+ weeks and for the last month I have been dropping weight left and right again.

I was a good 207# at the beginning of the month. Then major stress and an oral thrush problem happened.

The thrush has limited my food choices drastically. I was kind of living off junk food as it was easier to get in and keep down; as bad as that sounds, but I am sure it also helped contribute to my thrush as well. I scaled back to eliminating the carbs and sugars and stuck to proteins and sugar free yogurts.

The stress has been in the form of trying to move. We're technically squatting in a house illegally right now, that we were evicted from because we were forced to get an eviction for a program we needed toget on so we could get help to move.

Dh had been out of work for over 18mo and with our large family we need this program to help us move financially. It's a really long, long, long story and not one I want to get into ATM.

Any ways, they f'd up and we're stuck in this horrible waiting game. We were supposed to move on the 25th, and now it's the 1st with seemingly no end in sight. We'll probably be staying with friends shortly.

It wouldn't be so bad, except I birth at home, and without a home to birth in/at I have no idea where I will be living to havethis baby. As it is I am 5cm dilated and 70%+ effaced (normal for me by this time, btw). I'm worried the stress and lack of nutrition is going to push me into labor sooner than I want or need.

So all of this horrendous major stress, and the cut back to my dietary choices I am now down to nearly my lowest weight again! This morning I was down to 197.2#. :(

I haven't told my back-up midwife about it yet either. I know I will get reamed for losing so much weight in one month. I've lost nearly 10lbs!!! Holy crap that's a LOT!! When you consider at this stage babies are supposed to be gaining ½ a pound a week!!

I don't know what to do. I don't know how to up my calories when I can barely eat because of the stress and the proteins and low carb just make me lose weight! The carbs just aggravate my thrush. Most breads have HFCS in it so it seems nearly impossible to eat much of anything these days.

I just seriously don't know what to do. As the days progress on I am almost worries what my end weight is going to be. Granted, it'll make for a nice scale read when baby IS born, but this is NOT how I wanted to do it!! :(

I don't know... I've lost close to that this month too and my doc was happy.  LOL.  I am just busy with my toddler.

I think you are better off eating well and losing than eating junk food and maintaining.  Have you checked your ketones?

I know how you feel. With my last pregnancy which I found out about when I was only three months post op I lost weight the entire pregnancy. I started at 331 pre-op when I found out I was pregnant in October 2008 I weighed in at 267 as I progressed through my pregnancy I dropped down to 210 which freaked out one doctor but he didn't know I had Gastric Bypass it was kind of of funny at the time he keep looking at me and then the computer screen and then me and said "You do know that you are not supposed to loose weight when you are pregnant?" but after explaining he understood. When I delivered my daughter I weighed in at 197 and at my six week check-up I weighed in at 162 so it was an interesting pregnancy. My doctor's keep up on my blood work and ultrasounds and everything was fine. I actually delivered a perfectly healthy 6lb 15 oz 19 1/2 inch baby girl on May 22, 2009 and we both were great. I would recommend staying away from the junk food and eating healthy as possible and just make sure you continue to check in with the doctor's or midwives also keep up on your vitamins and blood work to check your levels. I don't think it is the norm to loose weight throughout the pregnancy but it does happen as I am an example.

I have heard of people losing up to 30-40 pounds with their pregnancies.  As long as you are getting adequate nutrition (the best you can, anyway), staying hydrated, and taking your vitamins, everything should be just fine!  Remember, it only takes about 300 extra calories a day to sustain a pregnancy.  Eat fresh fruit and yogurt when you can.  Throw some granola in there if the carbs won't make you sick.  Drink whole milk or 2% if you're used to skim.  I know what it's like not to have an appetite when you're stressed out... but every little bit helps!

I know you don't want to, but you REALLY should tell your midwife about this. Will she be happy? Probably not, but it's more important they know what's going on and can help you. That's what they are there for! Especially with the home birthing stress - she may have answers for you on a place you can birth that's not a hospital setting, and then you can let at least one of these stresses go.
What a predicament you're in! Maybe when you are making your protein choices, choose higher caloric ones - like, make a hamburger a cheeseburger and load it up with all the fixings. I think the idea of 2% milk instead of skim is great. Maybe add a few protein shakes in to up your calories AND protein. I don't know if any of this is helpful, but I really hope you let your medical team know what's going on. They are there to help you and the baby!

Well, it's not like I am constantly eating "junk food" LOL I usually have chicken and some veggies every day, and a salad, yogurt, apple juice, cheese, fresh fruits on hand. I love my chicken salad when I have it on hand. I do also have my protein shaked that I drink daily still as well. I ONLY used 2% milk knowing I'd need the extra fat for baby too, and I'd mix in some ovaltine to give it a boost.

Of course I'd also have some ice cream, chocolate, some cheetos, or brownies from time to time too.

Chicken is my main staple food though.

I guess I wasn't expecting to lose so much weight here at the end, so I am kind of shocked.

I am seeing a high risk doctor out of U of M and he even told me that I am not expected to gain as much weight as someone who has not had gastric bypass. He wants me to go to a nut to make sure I am on track for the right things. I am still only taking in about 600 calories a day (due to the morning sickness, I can barely eat). He just kept telling me to make sure I take my vitamins twice a day. He told me that it is still possible that I may lose weight, which I have lost about 12 lbs already, again I am sure it is due to M/S.

I know exactly how you feel. When I was preggers with tristan I lost 22 pounds. In the third trimester, I ended up gaining it back. My doc watched my labs closely, monitored the baby for growth, and dipped my urine alot.

This time, I'm only 7 weeks pregnant and already down 8 pounds. It's really hard for me to hold anything down. We know how you feel hun, just hang in there and remember baby doesn't need that much to live on. 300-500 cals and your vitamins... the rest is for you. I figure if I get alteast that much in, the rest of me will survive on my (still ample) fat stores... not that I don't wish this vomitting would stop!

Can you add some fats to get more calories without overcarbing?

Many women lose a few pounds in the last month or so (WLS or no WLS), so I don't think your MW will give you as much crap as you think she will.  And the average gain after WLS is smaller than pre-WLS.  Just keep enough in your system so you're not spilling ketones and you should be OK.  I don't know your BMI but it sounds like you weren't all the way done losing, so really I don't think this is going to hurt your pregnancy or anything.  Hang in there - you're almost there!
