Vaccines??

Do you vaccinate your babies??

Sage got her first set on Tuesday... One shot was 3 in 1, tetnis, diphtheria and something else, and a separate shot for Hep B.  She also got the rotavirus swallow.  She was very tired yesterday and slept during the day.  Today she is beastly, screaming and most of the time inconsolable.  She has calmed down now.  I've been giving her tylenol (generic) because her legs are still super sore and swollen.

Does this happen every time they get shots??  I know they need protection from diseases, but I feel like I'm doing the wrong thing because she is so upset, I feel so bad for her.

Then I remembered my psych classes saying there is a link between autism and multiple vaccines at a time.  I am so confused.  Can I ask my Dr. to spread the time out in between the vaccinations??  I need opinions!!

Thank you
Karen

My husband and I have decided to do a slowed vaccine schedule because of the same things you mentioned...not only autisum but the pain and just overall risk of anything....We decided any injection that has more than one med is ok, but if she has to get two multiple med injections or more...they will only be done one at a time.

there is a down side to this...our daughter will not be able to go into daycare or school until everything is completed, but her safety and well being are way more important to me....and im not one of those people to risk it.

good luck to whatever you decide...its your baby and your choice.

to each their own.

We vax fully and on our pediatrician's schedule.  Some babies do have reactions to vaccines, but they are generally mild.  It sounds like your little one is a bit sensitive, poor thing, with the swollen legs.  I'd call the pedi and ask if you should be doing anything about that besides administering Tylenol.  Also, you can report vaccine reactions - info here on how that happens.

The link between vaccines (namely MMR) and autism has been disproven several times, but the rumors persist.  It's your choice to vax fully, partially or on a delayed schedule, but I don't see much advantage to spacing out shots.  I think I'd rather deal with a few sticks and perhaps a fussy day or two rather than see that multiple times.

www.cdc.gov/vaccines/ This site has a lot of good info about vaccinating.  While I am very pro-vaccine, I admit there are cons and risks to vaccinating as well.  But I am comfortable with the choice to vaccinate on time.  It's awful to see our babies in any pain, but I'd prefer the pain of a vaccine than watching my infant suffer with pertussis or other vaccine preventable diseases when we travel or even in the US.

There is no vaccine - Autism risk but sounds like she is having a reaction and you should call her pediatrician.

the link between shots and autism was a lie... yes you can ask your dr to spread them out... sounds like shes in pain and generally not feeling well due to her shots... you can call your dr... in my opinion its very irresponsible not to vaccinate your child... give her baths.. hold her.. love on her... you can even put warm/cool compresses on her little legs... shots suck... but reactions are not unusual... she will be fine :)

I do not let them give Matty more then two shots or vax's at a time, and in the cases of multiple dose vax's (such as DTaP) I do not let them give him more then one. I do this b/c my daughter had a full on reaction after her six month shots, and I don't want Matty to have to go though that so we follow Dr, Sear's delayed vax. schedual. if you google it, it willcome right up.

in the end we will have fully vaxed (except for chicken pox, that one we get an exemption for), but do it slowly over a longer period of time so that his tiny body is not bombarded with too much at once. So far he has never had a reaction and has not even been too cranky afterwards.

I needed to find a slowed schedule, thanks for putting the info so we could access it!  Good to know there are other mommies out there that dont just go with the flow....

but as I always say, to each their own.

There is no link between Autism and Vaccines. Autism is caused by a mixture of genetic/environmental factors that do not "mesh" properly so to speak. Nobody knows for sure what these factors are. I think parents are too quick to blame vaccines when their child develops a developmental disability because they need a reason for it all to make sense. My daughter has Aspergers syndrome (high functioning autism) and I focus my efforts on helping her instead of blaming the pediatricians. And it sounds like your baby is just cranky and in a little pain from the shots, try baby tylenol. But lease don't worry about the shots so much.

My 9-year-old son also has Aspergers. I finally had all his vaccines brought up-to-date a few months ago because I came to the conclusion that I'd rather have a child with Autism then one dead or disabled from a preventable disease.

I would just continue with the Tylenol and if it continues through today would let the doctor know she is still having a reaction.
As far as the delayed schedules, I did it with Libby and I will do it with this baby.  TO each their own on what they think is right and wrong, it is only your decision that is best.  I have had many looooong talks with my doctor about vaccines and my concerns and she has never hurried me in to making a decision that I wasn't okay with.  Libby has had her shots spread out and is currently up-to-date on them.  I did this for personal reasons, one being I have a cousin who had a reaction to a shot at 6 months and is now extremely mentally handicapped.  Yes, it was proven that it was the vaccine that caused it.  I also have a cousin with Autism, but as everyone else said there is no link there.
Karen, you do what you think is best for you and your family.  Libby's first round of shots I cried that night and the day after because she was so uncomfortable and screamed bloody murder almost all night.  That was and is so unlike her, it was scary.  That was my final straw to do delayed vaccines.
