Allergy meds while nursing?

I know I'm probably being a pest this first week back but last night my allergies flared up really bad. Nose won't stop running throat sore, etc. Can you take benadryl while nursing? I put a call in to my docs office but thought I'd ask my team of experts as well. If not, any other remedies you know of for allergies that work? Thanks.

Contraindicated in breast feeding because of increased sensitivity of newborn to antihistamines. Thats from safefetus.com .

Also its job is "dry" secretions up, some women experience a reduction in milk supply and it can also cause infant drowsiness or fussiness.

I wanted to take it with Molly but didnt I already enough trouble keeping a supply.

Hopefully they can tell you something that will help!

I tried taking allergy meds with Hannah.  It seemed to try to dry my milk up also.  I was able to take tyenol cold and it didn't seem to effect my milk.   I hope you feel better soon!

It will cause a further drop in your supply and it is not good for baby, so you would have to pump and dump while it is in your system. Believe it or not the best thing to do is to put a few drops of breatsmilk in each nostril and tilt your head back, it will do all the work for you.

I'd try the breastmilk thing too!

Yeah, unfortunately some of the allergy meds are technically safe for baby to injest a small dose of from milk, but they lower supply, sometimes drastically.  I hope you get some relief somehow.

Yep, it also helps with eye infections, ear infections, cuts and scratches and pimples!

I took benadryl while nursing both of my daughters due to an allergic reaction I had to the mommy-ID bands. I had a horrible rash that swelled, blistered and made the back of my hand swollen (edema...like you get with the feet/ankles when pregnant). With my 1st pregnancy I didn't notice a difference in my milk supply, with my 2nd I had reduced supply but I believe it's because I wasn't able to put her to breast until she was 12 hrs old due to her being admitted to ICN (intensive care nursery) for low blood sugar (37) at birth and some respiratory distress. She wasn't released to me til she was 12 hrs old.
