Just really bummed today about my 1st OB appt.

I have had 2 ultrasounds in the last 1-2 months. The first one showed a heart beat of 138 bpm and the last one showed a heat beat of 168 bpm. They were both internal ultrasounds. Today I was hoping to get another one. I'm so paranoid that the heart beat won't be there I guess anymore. Instead of using an ultrasound machine they just used a heart doppler. I am only 10 weeks, 2 days from what they told me today based on my last ultrasound. The midwife told me that 50% of the time you won't hear a heart beat on just a hand held heart doppler at 10 weeks. Well, she couldn't find one, so now I'm left hoping that I was just the 50% that didn't hear one because I am only 10 weeks and not because the heart beat has stopped on my baby. She scheduled me for another ultrasound in 2 weeks at 12 weeks to ease my mind. How will I stay at ease when I have to wait 2 weeks! When I scheduled it at the counter the receptionist called it a checking for viability ultrasound. I almost started crying and ended up crying on the way home. My ultrasound is on July 6th. Please Lord keep me calm until then. Any words of encouragement or understanding would be helped. I am just stressed now. Thanks.

I am sorry.  The waiting is the worst in the beginning.  I had an US at 7 weeks and didn't hear the heartbeat til 12 weeks, it was such a long wait!

They tried to hear the HB at 10 weeks with me and we couldn't, so don't worry it's prob too early!

I had my 12 week appointment 2 weeks ago and My Dr said that sometimes you can't hear it on the doppler between 10-12 weeks.  She said if she couldnt find mine she would send me to ultrasound department for "fetal heartrate".  After about 5-10 minutes of trying with the doppler, she said " Ok, the baby wins, you are going back for an ultrasound."  Once I got back there, the heart beat was loud and strong.  So you are probably like me and alot of others and just to early to hear it on doppler.  Try not to stress

Until you can actually feel the baby playing soccer with your kidneys, it's hard not to panic over things like this.
Have faith in your body. Have faith in your baby. I know it's going to be a long two weeks, but try to relax and trust your body.

The MW was trying to pinpoint a blueberry in you belly, sometimes they miss or the baby is moving around too much. Next appointment will be better. ((hugs))

You have seen the heartbeat twice, so try to take comfort in that.  Those are good strong heartbeats too.  The midwife couldn't find the HB on me externally at ten weeks.  I wasn't thrilled but it was fine.  At 14 weeks, a different MW couldn't find it (I have an evasive baby!) so I had a quick scan and the baby was fine.

I bet your baby is just fine.  They should NOT call it a viability scan!  That's ****ty!

My baby moved constantly from the doppler! It wasn't until I was 16 weeks did I find it! (I rent a doppler) 10 weeks is very early to find it on a doppler. And if you are fluffy at all it makes it even harder! The wait in the beginning is SO hard. I honestly hated that part. I'm sure baby is ok!! Hang in there!!

My OB refused to use the doppler before 12-14 weeks because he said it just provides unnecessary stress on the mother when they more than likely won't pick up the heartbeat.  He said he typically starts around 16 weeks with the doppler.

Thanks Ladies! I feel so much better after reading all of the posts. I feel a lot better today. If they still can't hear a heart beat on July 6th, then I'm just simply going to ask for an internal ultrasound to be done so I feel better.

I sympathize!  All I've had done so far is a urine and blood test to confirm the pregnancy.  I don't have my first ultrasound until 10 weeks, which is July 15th.  I'm tellin ya... the days are dragging ass and this is the longest month of my life!!!!

I was just like you. I was constantly worried that something was going to happen to the baby. And I totally didn't feel pregnant. To ease my mind, I went to babysheart.com and rent a fetal heart doppler for $20/month. I was able to hear the heartbeat the day it came in the mail, which was exactly 10 weeks for me.

I usually listen to the heart beat 2-3 times a week. Even now at 20 weeks, I just enjoy hearing it. I use a stopwatch and time the beats too. Just for curiousity's sake.

You might think about that. If I recall, mine came in the mail in just a few days. There are several other companies that rent these out too. Just google it!

Best wishes!
Don't worry so much!
