Stajah has a hernia
Well we knew she had an umbilical cord hernia but now she has one in her abdomen area. Yesterday evening she was screaming crying and wouldn't take a bottle, binki, or stop when I tried soothing her. Decided to give her a bath with the help of my mom (the screaming fit was that bad). Thought bath might help bc she loves them. When we went to dry her off I notice a large hard knot above her lady parts. I took her right to the ER. As my mother suspected, it was a hernia. The er dr. got it to go back in a she was relieved and stopped crying. He called her dr. and I am to go see him tomorrow. The er dr said it needed to be fixed but ped would decided when. My question anyone else out there have this so young? ER dr also said she was born with it. Any stories would be appreciated. This new mom is scared!!

O wow I am so sorry. I am glad she is feeling better for now. I don't have any advice, just wanted to say good luck. My sister had eye surgery when she was 3 months old and she did just fine. I know she will do great. Good luck!

My son had one very young. He was screaming one day and wouldn't stop and his stomach got ready hard and dark purple. I freaked out of course and took him to the hospital and they "reduced it" or basically popped it back in. It was also in his abdomen. They ended up doing surgery within a month after that, but every few days I remember having to massage it back in...I could literally feel it pop. It was really gross.
The main concern is if it pops out and strangulates, which could cut off blood supply to the intestine, but it's usually very dramatic when it happens (as you saw).
I honestly would ask them to repair it as soon as possible...it was a very easy surgery and I know my son got a lot of relief. That's just my opinion though.

Thanks Jennifer, the er dr. was basically saying the same thing. Glad to hear it gave him relief. I believe it has been bothering her for some time because about every three days she strains a little to poop (that's how seldom she goes) and I know when it's coming she gets really fussy, just think this was the first time it had gotten bad enough for me to see it.
Thanks again! Stacey

OMG you must have been so very frightened! Im so sorry you and your baby are going through this. I dont have any advice as far as your baby being so little with a hernia, but I do know that surgeries themselves for hernia repair are very mild, outpatient even for adults. I wonder if your doctor would recommend you putting a not too snug ace bandage around her waist, to exert slight pressure so when she DOES strain to have a bm there is less of a chance of it popping out again? Idk, just a thought. Good luck at the pediatricans tommorrow, please keep up updated!
Super proud mommy to Dylan, Owen and Sophia Brianne!
my nephew had one also and was born with it but they didnt do surgery until he was almost 3 yrs old. I think it just depends how severe it is. hopefully it can be taken care of quickly and she has a fast recovery!

My son had eye surgery at 9 weeks and then 10 weeks old because he was born blind with cataracts. Only we didn't know he was blind until he was 8 weeks old because dobtors didn't catch it until his 2 month well baby check up. He was put under both times and I was scared to death! It all went well and his surgeries both lasted about 45 minutes-1 hour each time. He was groggy and a little fussy, but was back to normal by the next day. I cried so much when they took him back to the OR. My Hubby had to hold me up. They did not put the IV in until after he was alseep. At this age they just don't even know. He is now 3 years old and will be having more eye surgery for lens transplants in a few years. I'll be more scared at that time then when he was an infant only because he will know what they are doing and his crys will be because of fear, not because he's just a baby. Better to have it done now. Your baby won't remember any of it at this age.
Sorry to hear she is/was in pain. I had double inguinal hernias diagnosed when I was just over a year old...same symptoms, screaming, crying, and hard knots in the groin area. At that time, 1980, it was not common for little girls to get inguinal hernias. I was the first for my pedi. I had to have surgery but as most kids, I did well, and bounced back to the point that I was running the halls of the peds unit in the hospital by the next day. The scars are very faint and I had no after effects. They can maybe even do the surgery lap these days. I hope all works out well as I know it is so hard to have your little one sick.
Oh sorry to hear that she has to have surgery. Max had stomach surgery at 3 weeks old and it really was the hardest thing I ever had to wait through but he was in great hands and his surgeon was highly recommended top doctor.
I hope she get her appt real soon and all the pain can be stopped. You and your beautiful baby girl are in out prayers for a speedy appt and speedy recovery!!
