Have any of you had a HSG test done?
Hello,
My hubby and I are trying to get pregnant.. I am already 41 years old and we are ready to have a baby...however we haven't gotten pregnant since trying beginning in January.
I decided to see a RE and he agreed that given my age we have to approach it a little bit more aggressive than just waiting for x months more to see if I conceive. I have never been pregnant before. Before surgery I had PCOS, and after surgery I have lost 130 lbs.. I still have like 80 lbs more to lose but we don't want to wait any more and Dr. agreed that time is of the essence.
Anyway..he ordered blood work, he also did an ultrasound to check my uterus etc and next I am having a HSG test done (Hysterosalpingogram). This is a test that checks that everything in my uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes is okay. I know i have to start taking an antibiotic 2 days before test and then several days after.
How is this test? Does it hurt? I didn't ask if I will be okay after the test to go back to work immediately after that day or if I should be off the rest of day because I will be in pain.
Any of you that have had it done..could you please tell me about your experience?

thanks.

I have had two of them. They are shooting dye through your tubes to ensure they are clear and open.
My doctor didn't give antibiotic. I took ibuprophen before both procedures for the cramping of the uterus. The first one hurt a little as they had trouble with the catheter going in. The second one was a breeze. I didn't go back to work after the first one but I did with the second one.
I know there are a lot of us on here that have had them or multiple ones. I got pregnant with this baby right after my second HSG. Good luck TTC!!

I really think it is up to you. With the first one there was no way I could have gone back to work due to the pain and cramping but that was due to a complication they had. The second one I went back to work and wore pads for the afternoon. I had told my boss with the second one that I would be off the test of the day but was fine so I went in.
I had one about 10 years ago. For me it hurt a lot but only for a couple seconds. I had bad cramping and bleeding for about an hour after. It is different for everyone, I had a lot of anxiety going in which I am sure didn't help any.
I know alot of women who got pregnant rght after having this done. Good luck!

I had one 4 weeks ago and it didn't hurt at all. I didn't even realize they had started shooting the dye up. Now the one I had 4 years ago....BOY did that hurt like the dickens! I was then diagnosed with 2 block tubes and Uterine Fibroids then. I guess when it hurts it's most likely scar tissue in your tubes making it more difficult for the dye to go through..I remember my first one he kept having to shoot more and more dye up, as it wasnt going through. That must have flushed whatever scar tissue I had out because the one I had 4 weeks ago I had "spilage" and it didn't hurt at all. Both my tubes were open and all is well.

I had my mom drive me for moral support and was glad I did. I had cramping and bleeding. I wouldn't have gone to work if I was scheduled. The procedure itself hurt as they flushed the dye through...but luckily it wasn't that long of a procedure. I was aware there could be cramping, but no one told me about the bleeding...so bring a pad just in case. I had mild menstrual type cramps and spotting for about 3 days but could have worked after the first day. Good luck...this helps a lot of gals. I think I told you before that metformin was my miracle drug so be sure to ask about it. And are they testing hubby too? Shari
I have had two, my first one caused more cramping, I really think it depends on the person doing it. Take tylenol prior just in case. There is cramping, I think alot of pressure more so than actual pain, spotting/bleeding afterwards for some. Oh my doc always gives antiiotics too, I would ask if they didn't!
Oh and I got pregnant the month after each one!
Best of Luck,
Beth

Cna I say Ouch? It hurt the entire procedure for me, which is really short, but still! One of th emost painful medical procedures I've had done! I did work that evening however, as I was working swing shifts at the time, so the pain didn;t really linger. I did take some ibuprofen I think. If may hurt during the test, not to scare you or anything, but I went in not thinking that it would and it did. Eveyrone is different though. Good luck!
