low blood sugars in early pregnancy post-rny
Hi everone! I am a little over 5 weeks pregnant and a little over 1 year post-op.
I have been feeling light headed/dizzy lately. This morning I got shaky mid-morning (had a full bowl of oatmeal with raisins and berries and a protein shake already this morning). It had been a little less than 2 hours since the oatmeal. I got dizzy and shaky. Took my blood sugars right away I was diet to controlled diabetic pre-rny but have been completely normal post-surgery. My blood sugars were 74...less than 2 hours after oatmeal and 3 hours post-protein shake?? Is this normal for pregos after wls? I am not sure how much more I can eat! What do you do to keep the blood sugars up and still eat healthy?

I had 2 post op RNY babies and had this problem with both of them. I noticed it especially if I ate something higher in carbs. I did o.k. if I ate my proteins, and just a little carbs. I literally had to eat every 2 hours exactly or my sugars would be down as low as 34-36. It is not so much the quantity of how much you are eating, it is what you are eating. Focus on foods that will sustain you longer. Longer lasting proteins.

I agree with the previous posters- I had this really bad this last pregnancy- I almost blacked out in public twice! It is probably because you do need to eat protein with the carbs- If you are food journaling, that is a helpful way to recognize it. Carbs are good, but certain ones may set you off. It's really individual too. I like cheese, it's been my main staple since RNY, so I try to eat it throughout the day to help. I admire that you can actually eat oatmeal- I'm nearly two years out and still can't tolerate it- too heavy for me. You'll have to play around with your diet unfortunately- I also noticed that something I ate just fine before may lower my sugar another day- it's really the combination of foods that does it. Good luck! It's really a guessing game, but you'll start to recognize what it is that may or may not set you off.

I'm going through the same thing right now (11 weeks pregnant). I'm finding that even if I eat enough protein with a high carb meal, I still have the drop in blood sugar about an hour later. I bought a blood glucose monitor and have been self testing for the last three days. I test when I first wake up, before a meal, 30 mins after a meal, and whenever I feel "weird". It's helping me pinpoint the foods that cause this.
Good luck! I still haven't quite figured out why this is so extreme during pregnancy.
