I have my first prenatal appt today...

What can I expect?  I'm totally stressing.  Ever since I found out that I was pregnant (my first), I've been having dreams that they do an ultrasound only to find out that there's nothing in there!  I called my doctor's office to see what they do, only to be told "it varies from person to person."  UGH!

I haven't even told my parents yet because I want to make sure my little bean is growing okay and that everything looks good.

What was your experience?

Thanks!

They wouldn't do my first appt until 7 weeks or after, So I went it right at 7 weeks (as soon as I possibly could, of course, LOL)

All they did at my first appt was make me pee in a cup (I assume to confirm I was pregnant). And they did a vaginal ultrasound (easier than a pap speculum). I couldn't tell what the heck he was seeing on the screen, but he measured the "blob" there and gave me a set due date ("this is your due date now and forever - it WILL NOT change" he said).

Other than a few basic guidelines on vitamins and a few other dos/donts and asking if I had any questions, that was about all my first appt consisted of.

Good luck with yours!

Oh, forgot to add:

I'll be 37 years old when I deliver, and this is my first (and last). So we didn't tell a soul until after the 16 week quad screen results came back and I knew everything was okay in that respect. So I understand not telling yet - as hard as it was!!

They will also ask a ton of questions about your medical history and family medical history. Good luck!

Well, each doctor is different. My first prenatal appointment was a bunch of past history questions, blood tests, pee in a cup (testing for an infection), when your last menstral period was, blood pressure, gave me a bunch of stuff, and was generally a nurse visit. Then, the first doctor appointment is at 10 weeks. So, I was seeing an RE so I had already had an ultrasound. Some will do the first ultrasound to date and some don't.

Thank you for posting this!!  I go next Friday for my appt!  Nervous about it!  I am 38 and this is my first baby!  We did tell others about it, my husband couldn't contain himself!! LOL  I looked at it this way, with my age and medical history, I figured I could use all the prayers I could get from every one! LOL..  I did two home  pregnancy tests (first response digital), both were positive.  I then had a blood HCG test done (I am a nurse and work at a hospital) and it confirmed pregnancy!!  Still anxious and nervous!!  Let me know how your appt goes!!

God bless and Hugs!

Well my OB's office does things a little different. They have you come in for a nurses appt at 6 weeks to do all the paperwork, then you see the Dr at 8 weeks and they do a PAP, have you pee in a cup, feel your uterus, vital signs and that's about it. I have to go to a different office to have my ultrasounds done. Because I had a miscarriage in the past (I went in at 11 weeks to see my high risk Dr and there wasn't anything there, I had a blighted ovum - not to scare you. I too tested positive on a HPT and had all sorts of symptoms). Normally they don't do an ultrasound until 14 weeks at  my office.

Good luck and update us when you can! Trust me, when you see that little blob it is the happiest moment of your life!

Well, the appointment went well!  Nothing too exciting... they just confirmed the pregnancy, and I had to have bloodwork done.  I was really surprised that my blood pressure was normal at 125/80, because I was really nervous!

My doctor wanted me to try a different prenatal vitamin, but I told her I have difficulty swallowing large pills and I wasn't interested.  My vitamins are sufficient... but because they're not labeled as a "prenatal" she was hesitant to say they were okay.  Whatever.  LOL.  I'm not gonna choke down a horse pill and risk having something awful happen if I don't have to!

I go back in 4 weeks, on July 15th, for my first ultrasound.  I am SUPER excited.  Even though it was confirmed, it still just won't seem real until I see that little bean on the monitor.

Thank you, everyone, for your support!!

Congratulations!!!  Glad to hear everything went well!!  I understand what you mean!! Even though the urine/blood work both confirm pregnancy, it won't seem real until you see the ultrasound!  I need a visual!!!

Praying you have a healthy pregnancy and baby!!
