IUGR...high ris****il delivery...
Went to my regular OB appt today and found out the results of my ultrasound that was done on 6/4.
Baby is still measuring small and the doctor *****viewed it noted that he suspected IUGR and recommended weekly NSTs and ultrasounds and of course NO ONE CALLED ME because by their notes i should have had an NST and ultrasound already, instead i have 3 ladies at my OB's office scrambling to get my referrals (i have an HMO) for each test pushed through by tomorrow.
They went ahead and scheduled an NST for tomorrow at 1pm and if for any reason they were not successful in getting my referrals pushed through then they want me to check into Labor and Delivery to have the tests performed by them so that the insurance has no choice but to cover them.
The simple fact that they would have me manipulate the system that way has me worried.
This along with having an irritable uterus and the frequency of my BH contractions made my dr to put me off of work and on bed rest until delivery
Im really hoping baby is just petite like me (im under 5 ft) ...your thoughts and prayers are appreciated and welcome. Any insight into IUGR (what it is and what they will do to remedy it) would be nice as well.
Oh and my OB has referred my remaining care to High Risk since the required tests are done in their department anyway =/
thanks,
Blanca

Has the baby been measuring proper size up until this point? IUGR is intrauterine growth restriction. Unfortunately there is nothing they can do for it. If it is severe enough and the baby is not growing they may deliver the baby in hopes that he/she will grow better outside of the uterus. IUGR can be caused by a few things: structural abnormalities of the uterus that prevent the babe from growing, hypertension, infection, smoking or genetic issues. It sounds like your drs have a pretty good handle on the testing and the follow up care that you need from here on out. Good luck to you! I am a NICU nurse btw.
thank u for your reply.
prior to the one on 6/4 i had and ultrasound one month before where they noticed she was significantly small for her gestational age (before this she had measured a week behind on all u/s) at this one she was measuring nearly 3 weeks behind but they didnt show too much concern because according to them her abdomen was measuring OK..it was her limbs and head that were smaller.
I guess the ultrasound on 6/4 didnt show as much growth from the last one as they wanted to see by that time... but she did grow. Im really hoping shes just a petite baby, im very short but her daddy is over 6ft so im still a bit concerned.
Ive read that if they feel she'd do better outside the womb and i am at least 34 weeks they may induce (im 34 wks today) SO i guess i better get that bag packed just in case!!
thanks again!

This is exactly what I went through with my first baby. Let me tell you she is now in the 95th % for all 3 categories -she grew from the minute she was born :)
I had NSTs and was also on bedrest from 34 weeks on - (with my last 2 pregnancies 32 weeks and on)
Bailey was 5 lbs 9 oz, 19 inches long at 38 weeks and 5 days. It was found that Bailey had a true knot in her cord, however they are not sure if that was what lead to her IUGR.
Bella was closer to average, she was 6 lbs 9 oz 18.5 inches long at 38 weeks and 5 days.
This time around my Doc hasn't really said what is going on with Carter.I know he is measuring a little behind, but has too the extent I am not sure. I am going to ask her about it next week. He has been passing his NSTs (barely) and I think she is going to order one last ultrasound next week.
In the end both my kids have ended up being very healthy. Hang in there Momma - you are in the home stretch!

With Bailey my Dr induced me due to the IUGR, I had been on bedrest for weeks (since 34) - and after my last ultrasound at 38 weeks 2 days she determined that Bailey would do better on the outside - honestly there was a miscommunication the week prior so I had no ultrasound (her office failed to call me and schedule me one, and I didn't know to expect one) I think she would have induced me at 37 weeks on the dot had that not happened.
Since Bella was on the smaller side, not a complete IUGR she let me go on my own. I had preterm labor from 32 weeks on... so I think we were all shocked I had even gotten that far!
Weird that they were both 38 weeks 5 days huh?

I hope that everything ends up being ok. I don't know how acurate the ultrasounds really are in measuring the size of the baby either. My first baby they said was going to be HUGE and she was 7 lbs 13 oz, this one they are saying is 7 lbs 7 oz and I think it's going to be much bigger, we'll see. Good luck to you and I hope you have a healthy baby.
