I had to take that sugar test for gestational diabetes

I took that sugar test for the gestational diabetes and yes I threw up for about 20 minutes and then they took my blood sugar one hour later and I failed it was 209.  I don't understand how that can be-i do not eat sugar and my last A1C was 6.  So now I have to take my blood sugar 5 times a day and document.  I thought the surgery took care of my diabetes.  I am worried.  i do not want diabetes again.  I am 16 weeks pregnant and have only gained 3 lbs.  What's up??  Just concern that I really do have the gestational diabetes and it won't go away after the baby is born.  Anybody have any ideas??

If you had RNY, you no longer have a pyloric valve, which helps to regulate sugar entering the digestive track, and you will fail the traditional test, more than likely. I had them do a two hour blood draw where they did a fasting draw, I went out and ate a normal breakfast, and had my blood drawn two hours later. Clearly, if it made you throw up that will change the accuracy anyway, and they should have known that at your OB's- they specifically said to me if I threw up it would invalidate the results with my first pregnancy, which was before RNY and I didn't have a problem with the traditional test at that point. There are like 50 grams of sugar in that drink- I cannot handle anywhere near that. I told my dr. that and she was fine with the alternative. I would fight to have the alternative test done at this point. Good luck!

I took the same test last friday and 10 minutes after i drank it - that horrid familiar feeling came over me - heart palpitations, nausea, sweating.  I had to ask the nurse to put me in a room to get away from the general public because i am sure i looked like some crackhead going thru withdrawls lol.  I was fine after 20 minutes but i wouldnt be surprised if i fail it :(

Good luck on your!!!

I agree with the Xiomismom. Demand to do the two hour test where you have the blood drawn, eat something, then two hours later have it drawn again.

I had RNY and my pyloric valve is still very much inside me, only it is bypassed.

That said, I too recently did the glucose test for GD and I passed with flying colors!  Not only did I enjoy the drink because it was ice cold, I was thirsty and it was a really hot day, but I didn't feel any discomfort at all except a bit of queeziness due to the carbonation.

We're all different though and some of us who've had RNY and other types of WLS surgery do not metabolize sugars the same way, if at all.

Your weight gain so far sounds "normal" to me - up until I hit the 7 month mark I'd only gained a total of 6 lbs...

I agree with the previous posters that you should ask your OB or doc to test differently since you can't handle drinking the sugary swill.. this way you'll have a clear idea of what your sugar levels are and what, if anything, needs to be done..

Good luck!

My doctor did not make me take this test because i have had RNY. I monitored my blood sugar for 2 weeks 3 times a day and just logged it. That was fine with him... sorry it made you sick.

Thanks everyone for your input--I have been checking my blood sugar 5 times a day and it has been normal-under what they wanted except supper last night-I was not active after dinner and just rested and it was 152 but 30 minutes after it was 119-I might have been dumping alittle-who knows.  I will bring this to my OB's attention again and let him see my results.  I think I gave a false positve due to the fact that I was dumping after drinking that 100 mg sugar drink-it was so sweet it hurt my throat going down.  Anyway thanks again for everyone's input it really has helped me alot.
May we all have healthy babies and healthy hearts!!!
God bless
