Question About Gestational Diabetes Test
In three weeks, I will be having my diabetes test. Since I have nothing but complications from my RNY 3 years ago, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, I called the surgeons office to see if the surgeon would want me to take it some other way (I didn't even know if there was another way)
The nurse was very hateful and informed me to get an accurate there was no other way. She also said that I should stay in the Drs office so that if I passed out from vomiting someone would be there. That being said, the OB already told me that he was scared to give the test to me because of my medical history.
I am so nervouse now.....anyone have any other suggestions or did their OBs try something else??
Thanks in advance!!

My advise would be to NOT take the test, especially if you know you have had problems.
I did not take the test, and my OB suggested I test my blood sugar during a normal day of eating. I started out testing one day a week, and if I occasionally had a more "carby" meal, I would test after that to see how my blood was reacting. Eventually, I noticed that my sugar was a little wacky, and I started see the GD nutritionist and Dr. I test everyday now, because I have had issues keeping the levels in line. There is no reason to put your health, and frankly, your babys health in jeopardy by drinking the glucola if it's going to make you sick. I can't stand when medical professionals treat you inconsiderately because they just don't know something, instead of checking things out for you.
There ARE other ways!!! Let us know what happens!!! :-)

I informed my OB when it was time to take the test that I couldn't do the drink. Their other alternative was to eat a full sized candy bar and drink a can of soda. Again, can't do that either. I explained that I would throw it up and the results would not have time to be accurate. I did the two hour test. I had them do a blood draw fasting first thing in the morning. I then went out and ate a normal meal, and had my blood drawn two hours later. I passed just fine and did not get sick- if I had, it would have been my fault for choosing foods to eat that I know I can't- LOL. See if you can do this test. Best of luck.

I have had 2 post op RNY babies w/2 different OB's and NEITHER one of them made me do the sugar drink once I explained to them that I couldn't do sugars over 15 grams. The 1st one-3 years ago had me take my blood sugars for 3 days, 1st thing in the morning, and 2 hours after each meal and bring my results back in to her at my next visit. My last baby I had last July, he had me just come in for a fasting blood draw and he did a A1C level and that was it.
I would just flat out refuse to drink it. They cant make you drink it if you get sick on sugars. I personally couldn't tolerate anything over 15 grams of sugar when I was pregnant.

I think you should refuse the test they give the "normals". Our body doesn't work the same and you wouldn't want to cause stress to yourself, right! I so wish I could find an OB who was sympathetic to "us" and understood our surgery. Obviously, there are alternatives. You are your own best advocate. Tell them what you need.

Just ask your OB to do an A1C, its a simple blood test and gives very accurate results from what I understand. I simply reminded my OB that I could not do the drink and he said , oh ya thats right we can do a blood test.

My OB wanted me to do one at my 13 week appt but when I told her I could not tolerate over 15 g of sugar she said that she has had other post ops do it and had no issues I said that could be because there body could be use to having more sugar however, mine is not and I do not want to get sick. So, next week I will have a fasting blood draw and then will speak to my surgeon NUT to find out what she sugest for teh 24-28 week test and we'll see what happens. But I will refuse it if it comes down to it
