protein supplementation in pregnancy

I've been researching and everything I find says that the best way to get protein is through food sources (duh).  Well I can't eat that much protein AND get in the rest of the balanced diet necessary for a healthy baby.  Because whey protein is FDA regulated as a food and not a drug, there is no clear answer.

What are your thoughts or what have you done during your pregnancy?

At the beginning of my pregnancy I did drink protein shakes because I felt I wasn't getting enough in.  I now just rely on regular whole foods - I start my day with some whole grain carbs, get in some protein when I get to work, and progressively make sure that I eat more protein, fruit, veggies, etc etc... Every once in a while now I'll have a shake if I find that I'm in a rush and don't have time to make something to eat or if I feel I haven't eaten enough and want the extra protein.. Indeed with our stomachs being the way they are we can't get all the food groups in at one sitting!  If you are going to mix your own shakes with whey that you buy at Nutrition House or GNC, I would recommend you mix with 2% or whole milk to ensure that you're getting enough carbs and fat in there also...  Have you consulted with your surgeon's nutritionist with respect to your eating habits during pregnancy?

I had my surgery at an Army hospital, and unfortunately the nutritionists here don't know squat about bariatric nutrition. Everything I've learned about what to eat and what to avoid has been from numerous message boards, WLS books, and successful post-ops.  I've been doing rolled oatmeal with fruit in the morning, a fruit/veg snack, protien with fruit/veg for lunch, fruit/veg/complex carb snack (varies), protein with veg for dinner and sometimes I'll do a snack at night, sometimes not. I've got a few varieties of BE's protein because it doesn't have so many added ingredients that I wouldn't be sure about having with pregnancy. So I'll do those when I feel I need to, and I have always mixed them with par****er, part milk for better taste :)

Thankfully I've not had any sickness yet.  Let's just hope that continues and I won't have to worry about getting enough protein in.

If I can't get the information from my primary care doc or the surgeon at DDEAMC, then I'll choose that option.

This is the first time I've been on here since my surgery fiasco!  I'm so happy for you!  Thanks for coming to visit me while I was in the hospital.  Hope to see you at next month's meeting.
