They say I have Gestational Diabetes-HELP

Okay last week I had to do the glucose tolerance test...which was horrible. I told my OBGYN that I heard many who have had gastric bypass aren't able to tolerate it very well and that results were often inaccurate. She said I needed to try... so I did. I drank that horrible drink (my heart started racing immediately, which it does if I have to much sugar)...made it to the doctor...threw half of it up... they drew blood... I was sick the rest of the night. They called today and said my blood sugar was over 230 and it should have been under 120. She went onto say rather than retest they were going to send me to a nutritional specialist. I am a mess over this. They have said all along that the baby is a right on track, although I am carrying extra amniotic fluid.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Are the results accurate??

Also my iron was a 9??? She said we would talk about that next week....

What do I do?

Luckily, I tolerated the drink and the test without issue and everything was fine, but I have heard of similar situations to yours. I would go to the NUT like they said and see what they have to say. Also, if you can handle it somehow, try to do a retest...or if you can't do the retest, than ask them to prescribe a glucose monitor, and test your blood everyday.

As for the iron, mine was low too towards the end of my pregnancy and after. I was given a list of high iron foods from my OB and they just told me to incorporate more of them in to boost those levels. Cream of wheat and spinach with Garlic and feta are what I consumed the most of.

Good luck with everything!

Thank you for your suggestions... I will try to incorporate some of those into my diet... I love spinach...

I would have them draw a fasting, then eat normally, then two hours later have them do it again. I know I am going to refuse the tolerance test cause I can't do it. You can also have them do monthly A1C checks.

First - it's going to be OK!
You will see the nutritionist and they will put you on a GD diet. Now, this diet may be more carbs than you can handle, depending on how far along after surgery you are. I have it too, and I know I can't have even the occasional "carby" meal because of it, so I stick to my lower carb (which to me, equals high fiber) meals. I test my sugar after I eat (the Dr. office will give you instructions) and my levels have been great. It's going to be ok!
I am SOOO sorry they made you try the test. I refused to do it, knowing it would make me sick, and I have been testing throughout. It's only recently I started having the occasional high reading, and therefor have been diagnosed officially. Let us know how your nutritional appointment goes!

It is so nice to hear it is going to be ok!

I have never dumped after surgery... Occasionally my heart rate goes up if I eat to many sweets but other than that... nothing.

Carbs have never really been a problem either... I try to eat the smaller meals more frequently.

I right now just feel more tired than usual... did you ever notice any symptoms??

nope, not at all. I honestly didn't think I would have it this time around (I did have it with my son, when I was at my heaviest) but I had no idea untill I tested. It's good to know, or the baby can get too big and have low blood sugar at birth. I diet controlled my GD with my son till the last few weeks, when I needed just a little insulin, and he was born with perfect blood sugar and at 7 lbs, 4 oz was a great size!
I am eating smaller meals more frequently as well - and I have found myself starving this pregnancy. so, I usually do some kind of carb (a high fiber wrap is my favorite) and protein (Peanut Butter or lowfat cheese) whenever I eat. If I have room, I add some veggies. I am look at about 100-115 grms of protein a day, and about 100-120 net carbs a day (net meaning minus my fiber intake, which I try to keep at about 30-35 grms.)
I don't know if this is helpful, of if it's too much info, but if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask!!

I had something similar happen but my sugar was only 130.  Then they wanted me to do a 3-hour version with 2x the amount of sugar.  Yeah, right.

So now I am testing my sugar a few times a day.  We are figuring out I have something like reverse diabetes.

ie.  I eat a banana and my blood sugar drops instead of rises.  My pancreas is hardcore.

Testing is a PITA but I feel a lot better since starting their plan and testing so I can't complain.  Also, my baby is measuring almost 6lbs at not even 33 weeks.  Anything to keep him from getting macrosomic is fine by me.
