Does anyones OB Dr. do more ultrasounds because you had GBS? Just to check on growth and stuff. I haven't had, but one when I was 7 weeks, and I am getting a little nervous. I want to be sure everything is ok? Thanks, any advice is helpful.

Nope.  Having GBS doesn't impact the growth/development of the baby.  The issue is passing the infection to the baby during a vaginal birth.  Most docs don't test for it until 37 weeks.  If you have it (I did) you are just given antibiotics right before delivery.

Did you have an ultrasound or GBS test at 7 weeks?  Your Dr. should another ultrasound around 20 weeks.

I had my first ultrasound at 7 weeks, and everything looked great. I was just curious, because I have heard that I will probably have a smaller baby because of the surgery. I will be having a c-section because I did with my first pregnancy, but that was before gastric surgery. Thanks!

From what I have read there is no rule of thumb when dealing with a post WLS patient.  In my personal experience I had many conversations with my doctor.  He felt that monthly ultrasounds were important to monitor growth to be on the safe side but they did not start till after my big ultrasound.

Most OBs will not do more ultrasounds because you had gastric bypass surgery. Some will though, and if you choose to go to a high risk one, they certainly will.

I had 1 ultrasound at 6 weeks.  (To date the pregnancy, and also because I had some spotting).  And then I had my "big" ultrasound at 19 weeks.  (To check for all organs, and to check for birth defects, etc.)  So far, that is all I have had.

I think the lady who answered your post thought by "GBS" that you meant "group B Strep"... which is a type of strep infection that people can be carriers of. I don't think she realized that you meant "Gastric Bypass Surgery".

I also don't think having gastric bypass surgery will necessarily mean having a smaller baby. But it does mean that you have to make sure you get in enough vitamins/minerals/protein/water! It may also mean that you are more prone to deficiencies than the average pregnant woman.

How far out from surgery are you? Are you still losing weight or have you been maintaining a steady weight? Have you had your gastric bypass surgeon or other doctor run a full set of blood work to see how your vitamin levels are?

Yes, my bad I read it as Group B Strep.

Emma, hubby and I are just now thinking of ttc. When speaking with my obgyn, I asked him how this pregnancy would be handled differently than my first two (pre-op)... He told me that because I had the surgery, he would do monthly sonos on me to check the baby, growth, development, etc.

So maybe it varies from dr to dr?

I went to the High Risk OB for my first trimester screening and was told then (week 11) that after my next U/s (18 weeks) I would have monthly ones just to make sure everything looks good. Plus I am "old" so I get them for that.

My reg OB isn't doing anything special with me.

Ok...the small baby thing is not true. My little girl is HUGE! So don't worry about that. I have had 7 ultrasounds so far for the following reasons:

7 weeks (to check for due date/date of conception)
9 weeks (I had a little spotting and have had 2 miscarriages so they were nice and just checked to make sure everything was OK)
12 weeks (nuchal-translucency - most doctors should offer this one)
19 weeks (growth and gender check - most docs will offer this one as well)
23 weeks (growth)
29 weeks (I paid for a 3D ultrasound)
31 weeks (I am going tomorrow for another growth check)

The high risk doctor at the hospital wants to check me for growth every 6 weeks because of the GBS. But not all docs feel this way. If you are at 14 weeks I think you can still get the nuchal translucency (checks for downs syndrom and some other things) but you'd have to get it done soon as there is a small window of time that this test is accurate starting at 12 weeks. If you are concerned and want another u/s, ask your doc for one.

Both of my post op babies were 9lb6oz and 10lb6oz. More ultrasounds vary by doctor. The important thing to remember is that baby will take what it needs from you and you don't want to suffer, so it is important to have your labs drawn regularly. My b-12, iron and vit d slipped during both pg's...but because of monitoring every 4-6 weeks I was able to supplement and all was well. Be sure to take those prenatals. Also... you have to eat some good carbs. Ketosis is bad for baby. I know it goes against wls rules, but you have to do it for now. Follow the guidelines and work with your docs and you will be fine. One easy way to add a few more calories for the pg is a glass or two of milk a day. Good luck. Shari
